Last week, Highlands Ranch junior senate started a new year round fundraiser named Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

On the first week of the fundraiser, the stand started off well by making 50 dollars. Now the stand is selling 10-15 cups a day; in total, they have collected around $100 according to Joe Bertsch, junior senate member.

Bertsch said, “I think it’s working pretty well, but we aren’t making as much as we thought we would, but hopefully it will eventually skyrocket.”

Alex’s Lemonade Stand was inspired by a young girl named Alexandra Scott. On her 1st birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, which is a childhood cancer  that develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body.

Scott came up with a way to raise money for childhood cancer research. Her idea was a lemonade stand.

At age eight, Alexandra Scott passed away. She had raised over one million dollars to find a cure for neuroblastoma.

In honor of Scott, junior senate created the lemonade stand where students can buy a glass of lemonade for one dollar during 3rd period. All of the proceeds will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Their future goals are to get the school involved with it and just hopefully raise enough money to donate. Senate is also hoping to make it a school wide thing.
Chasmine Malabanan, junior, said, “ Alex started something amazing and I truly believe that this can become a new tradition at HR.”
