The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, also known by its acronym FCA, is a Christian ministry led by students, teachers, and coaches alike; all who come together every Friday morning in the ACE room to explore the world and high school through Jesus Christ. Their goal is to make a change to the lives of high schoolers as they maneuver their way through their next four years. “Our hope is we do something somehow, somewhere to show people what our faith is all about,” said Bas Wolf, ACE teacher.

  During their meetings, FCA plays games and discusses a message that is given by a student or a teacher, or even pastors from student’s youth groups, and then pray before heading off to class; though it varies based on the day and the number of students that show up that morning. “At the beginning of our first meeting there were 55-60 kids, which is how every club starts, and then [we] get the diehards that stick with it,” said Wolf.

  Lessons from the past have definitely left an impact on students who attend. One of Sidney Smith’s, senior, favorite lessons was one of the very first she heard when she began attending the club. Smith said, “Mr. Wolf told us a little bit about his testimony, and if you haven’t heard that, it’s pretty amazing.” One has the chance to hear it next year if they choose to join the club. “Anyone is welcome,” she added.

  But now, as the 2019 school year is coming to an end, numerous key student leaders, such as Smith, are graduating and heading off to university. Having been a leader since her sophomore year of high school, Smith is leaving the club to attend Baylor University. When asked about possible student leaders for next year, Smith said, “There’s a whole bunch of good people that are here [to take on leadership roles].”

  Delaney Atchison, sophomore, is a possible student leader for the club. Though plans for next year have yet to be discussed in terms of time and place, Wolf has had conversations with a couple of students about next year. “I’ve had the conversation with Delaney about it. Not only do I think she would like to, but I think she would be phenomenal at it,” he said.

  With student leaders like Smith, FCA has definitely made an impact on not just the school, but also themselves. Smith said, “It’s cool to just be a part of a Christian organization in my school, that’s what I’m passionate about. That’s what my life is centered on.”
