Douglas County’s Women in Sports Luncheon

On January 13th, five young athletes from HR were recognized at the school district’s Women in Sports Luncheon. At this event, young women from middle and high schools around the district were honored for their talent, sportsmanship, and leadership within their sport. The nominees from HR were seniors Izzy DePinto, Melissa Evans, Brittney Kerr, Megan Zebrowski and Hailey Matthews.

With the help of coaches, Sue Dakovich and Bruce Wright chose the athletes to be honored at the luncheon. “They were chosen based on athletics, academic achievement, and community service and involvement,” said Wright. At the event, they are honored alongside young women from other schools in the district.

Brittney Kerr, a soccer player, knows it is important to support young women within the athletic community. “It is important to recognize women in sports because too often in our culture we put men and boys on a pedestal—especially when it comes to sports,” said Kerr. “Recognizing women helps empower future generations of girls to continue making an impact.”

As an athlete in a predominantly female sport, cheerleader Hailey Matthews is familiar with challenges one faces as a young woman in sports. “I think the most challenging part is that not many people actually get to see what cheerleading is,” said Matthews. “Most people see us on the sidelines but that’s only part of what we actually do.” The honor she received gave her the opportunity to be a role model for other girls in cheerleading.

Izzy DePinto, a soccer player, knows that this honor means being a role model for girls in both athletics and academics. “I’m so honored to be able to represent HR as a female athlete and I hope all of us at the Women in Sports Luncheon inspire younger girls to follow their dreams in athletics and in school,” she said.

Since only five students from HR were chosen, these young women were very grateful to receive this recognition and responsibility. Megan Zebrowski, softball and soccer player, said, “In the sports community, to be represented with honor is a great accomplishment because it shows that parents, players, and coaches have recognized the leadership you bring to the team.”

These girls have dedicated years of their lives to their sports and athletics have become large parts of who they are. Melissa Evans, volleyball player, recognizes that sports hold lessons that every girl can learn from. “Volleyball is important because it taught me leadership and confidence,” she said.

These five female athletes will continue to be role models for girls in sports community. For example, Melissa Evans will be continuing her volleyball career at North Carolina State University and Izzy DePinto will be continuing her soccer career at Baker University.
