This time of the year is one of the most important parts of the season for HR’s track and field team. The state meet is coming up and the athletes are training to qualify for it.
“In Colorado, it’s huge to be a state qualifier,” said John Padjen, co-head coach. “There are six weeks of qualifying meets, and during those meets, if you are in the top 18 overall at those meets, then you qualify for the state meet,” said Padjen.
This year to prepare, each athlete has a specific workout based on their event. “Our sprinters, jumpers, distance runners, throwers, everyone has a set workout with the intent to have personal bests and see if they can be in the top 18,” said Padjen.
According to HR’s track and field website, the state meet is on May 19th, 20th, and 21st.
“We have averaged over 20 state qualifiers in the last six years. Last year, we qualified eight out of nine relays, and we are one of the few teams in the state that have been able to do that,” said Padjen. The team has achieved some great things so far, so this year, the team’s goals are even higher.
