Fort Worth, Texas — A Fort Worth middle school has been deemed “unsafe for occupancy” after intense storms and relentless rainfall caused significant damage to parts of the recently built building, forcing students and staff to temporarily relocate.
Meacham Middle School will remain closed for several weeks while officials address the damage and determine when the facility can safely reopen.
Fort Worth Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Peter Kicata announced the temporary closure as school officials worked to respond to the effects of the storms that battered the area.
Heavy Rain Causes Significant Damage
The closure follows a round of powerful storms that brought more than 3 inches of rain to the Fort Worth area Thursday alone.
According to Forecasters, approximately 3.40 inches of rainfall was recorded in Fort Worth on Thursday, adding to flooding concerns across the area.
Fort Worth ISD said the rainfall caused significant problems inside portions of the Meacham Middle School building.
“As a result of significant heavy rainfall, portions of the recently built Meacham Middle School building are currently unsafe for occupancy,” Fort Worth ISD said on their website.
The school had already been closed Thursday and Friday because of flooding associated with the week’s storms.
Officials now expect the building to remain unavailable for several weeks as the district works through the damage.
Students Will Temporarily Move to Another School
Although Meacham Middle School’s building is closed, students will continue attending school as Meacham students.
The district plans to temporarily move students and staff into the Briscoe Elementary School building, which is currently unoccupied.
The temporary relocation is intended to allow students to continue their education while the district addresses the storm-related problems at their regular campus.
School officials emphasized that the move will not change the students’ status or identity as members of the Meacham Middle School community.
“Most importantly, although students will report to a different building, they will remain Meacham Middle School students,” Dr. Licata said in a statement to middle school parents. “Our goal is to preserve continuity and stability throughout this temporary transition.”
The district’s decision comes as families are being asked to adjust to a sudden change in where students will attend classes.
Classes Canceled Monday During the Move
The temporary transition will require an additional day for staff to prepare the new location.
Classes at Meacham Middle School have been canceled for Monday, October 5, while staff members move operations into the Briscoe Elementary School building.
Classes are expected to resume Tuesday, October 6, with students reporting to the temporary campus.
The additional closure gives district employees time to organize classrooms, move necessary materials and prepare the building for students.
For families, the temporary relocation means students will need to become familiar with a different school building while repairs and safety assessments continue at Meacham.
Storm Damage Forces Major School Disruption
The situation highlights how quickly intense rainfall can disrupt daily life, particularly when water enters or damages public buildings.
Meacham Middle School is a recently built facility, making the decision to classify portions of the building as unsafe for occupancy especially significant.
For now, the district’s priority is keeping students and employees out of areas that could pose a safety risk while maintaining educational continuity.
Officials have not indicated that students will return to the Meacham building until it is considered safe for occupancy.
The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place for several weeks, giving crews and district officials time to assess the extent of the storm damage and determine the next steps.
Families will likely continue receiving updates from Fort Worth ISD as the situation develops and a timeline for returning to the regular campus becomes clearer.
