Southern California Favorite Porto’s Expands to Ontario With New Bakery and Café

Ontario, California — Fans of Porto’s Bakery and Café in the Inland Empire will soon have a new reason to celebrate. The popular Southern California bakery is expanding to Ontario, bringing its well-known Cuban-inspired pastries, cakes, sandwiches and other favorites closer to residents who have traveled to other locations for years.

The new bakery and café is planned for a commercial development at the southwest corner of Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard. According to the City of Ontario, construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the new location expected to open in 2028.

The project marks a significant expansion for the family-owned business, which has built a loyal following across Southern California with its signature pastries and Cuban-inspired menu.

Where Will the New Porto’s Bakery Open?

The planned Porto’s Bakery and Café will anchor an 8.6-acre commercial development in Ontario, according to the city.

The development is expected to include outdoor dining areas, landscaped walkways and a central plaza, creating a space where customers can enjoy food and gather with family and friends.

The bakery itself is being designed with hospitality and shared dining experiences in mind. Plans include an atrium and patio, along with a menu that will span breakfast through dinner.

These features could make the location more than a quick stop for pastries, offering customers additional space to sit down and enjoy meals throughout the day.

The development will also add a new dining destination to Ontario as the Inland Empire continues to attract businesses serving the region’s growing customer base.

Porto’s Owners Say Ontario Is a Meaningful Milestone

The expansion comes after years of customers from the Inland Empire visiting Porto’s existing bakeries and expressing their hopes for a location closer to home.

“For years, we’ve met families from across the Inland Empire who have made the trip to visit our bakeries and shared how much they hoped we would one day be closer to home. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received and excited to become part of Ontario,” said Beatriz “Betty” Porto, owner and vice president of community affairs at Porto’s Bakery. “For our family, this is a meaningful moment.”

The announcement reflects the connection the bakery has developed with customers throughout Southern California.

For Inland Empire residents, the Ontario location could reduce the need to travel to other cities to pick up the bakery’s popular items or enjoy a meal at one of its cafés.

However, customers will have to wait a little longer. With construction planned to begin in 2027 and an opening targeted for 2028, the bakery is still in the planning stage.

From a Small Bakery to a Southern California Favorite

Porto’s Bakery traces its history to Rosa Porto, who opened the first official storefront on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park in 1976.

Her three children — Beatriz, Raul Jr. and Margarita — helped at the bakery and now run the family-owned business, according to Porto’s website.

The bakery’s menu continues to feature recipes associated with Rosa Porto, including its signature Cheese Roll and Potato Ball. Other offerings reflect the family’s Cuban heritage and its emphasis on hospitality.

These familiar menu items have helped make Porto’s a popular destination for customers looking for pastries, baked goods, cakes and savory meals.

The Ontario expansion will bring that established menu to another part of Southern California while continuing the family’s longstanding bakery tradition.

How Many Porto’s Locations Are There?

The planned Ontario bakery will join six existing locations in Northridge, Buena Park, Burbank, Downey, Glendale and West Covina.

Porto’s is also preparing for another expansion at Downtown Disney, where a separate location is under construction.

The Ontario project represents another step in the company’s regional growth, giving customers in different communities more opportunities to visit the bakery.

While the opening dates for future locations can change as projects progress, the current plan for Ontario calls for construction to start in 2027, followed by an opening in 2028.

What Customers Should Know Before the Opening

People looking forward to the new bakery should keep the proposed timeline in mind. Porto’s Ontario location is not expected to open until 2028, and construction is scheduled to begin the year before.

The planned location at Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard will feature a bakery and café, outdoor dining areas and gathering spaces within the larger commercial development.

For longtime Porto’s customers, the announcement offers a glimpse of what is ahead. For residents who have not regularly visited the existing locations, it could provide a more convenient opportunity to try the bakery’s well-known Cheese Rolls, Potato Balls, cakes and Cuban-inspired meals.

The project is also expected to add another dining option to Ontario’s commercial landscape as development moves forward.
