Eau Claire, Wisconsin — A 29-year-old Wisconsin State Patrol trooper has died from injuries he suffered after falling from a bridge onto Interstate 94 during a high-speed vehicle pursuit, authorities announced Saturday.

Trooper Bradley Ritger died Friday, Oct. 2, more than a week after he was seriously injured during the Sept. 21 pursuit near the Dunn County and Eau Claire County line.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and its Wisconsin State Patrol division, Ritger was moving to “a position of cover” on a bridge when he fell onto the highway below.

Trooper Fell After Deploying Tire Deflation Device

Ritger had been involved in the traffic pursuit when he deployed a tire deflation device on the bridge deck in an effort to stop the fleeing vehicle.

Shortly afterward, he fell from the bridge onto Interstate 94.

The trooper received “lifesaving efforts and critical medical care” following the fall, according to WisDOT. Despite those efforts and more than a week of medical treatment, he died from his injuries on Oct. 2.

The vehicle involved in the pursuit struck the tire deflation device Ritger had deployed before eventually coming to a stop in a ditch, according to local reports.

The driver was later identified as Martell Tolbert Mitchell of Minneapolis.

Wisconsin State Patrol Remembers Ritger

Following Ritger’s death, WisDOT described him as “a dedicated public servant” whose work ethic and positive attitude had left a lasting impression on those around him.

The department said he approached his work with professionalism, integrity and a commitment to serving others.

“Whether assisting the public, supporting his fellow troopers, or taking on difficult challenges, he consistently demonstrated compassion and willingness to help wherever needed,” the department said.

His dedication to both his family and his profession was also highlighted in the statement.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to Trooper Ritger’s family, friends, loved ones and all who served alongside him,” WisDOT said.

Family Asks for Privacy While Grieving

WisDOT and the Wisconsin State Patrol said no additional information would be released at this time out of respect for Ritger’s family.

“Out of respect for the family, no additional information will be shared at this time,” the agencies said. “Funeral arrangements are being made by the family. We kindly ask media and the public to respect their privacy and space for grieving.”

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.

Evers said that after funeral arrangements are finalized, he plans to issue an executive order directing that United States and Wisconsin flags be lowered across the state to honor Ritger.

“Our hearts break for Trooper Ritger and his family,” Evers said. “He was already leading a life of public service and dedication to our state, and our state workers join his coworkers and colleagues, friends, and loved ones in mourning his passing. This was a young life lost far too soon.”

Evers said he and his wife, Kathy, were praying for Ritger’s family and would continue keeping his colleagues and loved ones in their thoughts during the difficult days ahead.

Ritger Served Wisconsin for Nearly Five Years

Ritger had served with the Wisconsin State Patrol for almost five years, primarily working in the Dunn County area.

He joined the agency as a member of the 67th Recruit Class and earned several certifications during his career with the State Patrol.

Before joining the WSP, Ritger spent three years with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, continuing his career in public service.

The driver involved in the pursuit was arrested and faced charges including attempting to flee an officer and recklessly endangering safety, along with several drug-related charges, according to local reports.

For Wisconsin State Patrol colleagues, family members and members of the communities Ritger served, his death marks the loss of a young officer whose career was dedicated to public safety.
