Florida Officer Arrested After Allegedly Forging Dead Man’s Signature to Make Repairs to His Home

Lauderhill, Florida — A Florida police officer who responded to a welfare check and discovered a man dead inside his home is now facing multiple criminal charges after investigators accused him of using the deceased man’s identity and attempting to claim his property.

Brian Louis Sguros, who was serving with the Lauderhill Police Department at the time of the incident, was arrested on October 20, 2026, following an investigation by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO).

According to investigators, Sguros allegedly became involved in the deceased man’s affairs shortly after discovering his body in 2022. Authorities now accuse him of carrying out a years-long effort to gain control of the man’s home and property.

Officer Found Dennis West Dead During Welfare Check

The case dates back to July 11, 2022, when Sguros responded as a backup officer to a welfare check at a residence on N.W. 12th Street in Lauderhill.

According to the arrest report, officers found Dennis West dead inside the home. The medical examiner determined that West had died of natural causes.

Investigators allege that Sguros became involved in West’s affairs shortly after his death. Authorities say the officer claimed to be West’s friend when speaking with the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office and stated that West had no living family members.

Detectives later determined that both claims were false, according to the investigation. Authorities also alleged that Sguros likely had not known West before responding to the welfare check.

These findings became part of a broader investigation into how the officer allegedly attempted to gain access to information about West and establish a claim to his property.

Investigators Allege a Years-Long Property Scheme

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Sguros allegedly took several steps over the following years to establish control over West’s home.

Detectives said he paid the property’s taxes and utility bills in West’s name. Investigators also accused him of forging West’s signature on a document used to obtain a permit for repairs to the residence.

Authorities further alleged that Sguros accessed law enforcement databases multiple times to gather information about West.

The alleged database access is a significant part of the investigation because it raises questions about whether information available to law enforcement was improperly used in connection with the property.

Investigators have described the alleged actions as part of an effort to take over West’s home and property after his death.

Paperwork Filed With Broward County Property Appraiser

Another key development occurred in February 2025, when Sguros allegedly filed paperwork with the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office claiming that his possession of the property dated back to August 2022.

That date was only weeks after West was found dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

The filing is among the actions investigators are examining as they piece together the alleged effort to establish a claim to the property.

Authorities have not established through a court verdict that Sguros illegally acquired the home. The allegations remain part of the criminal case, and the charges must be addressed through the legal process.

Florida Officer Faces Multiple Criminal Charges

Sguros was arrested on October 20, 2026, nearly four years after the initial welfare check, according to the information provided by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The charges listed in the arrest information include:

  • Official misconduct
  • Criminal use of deceased personal identification
  • Criminal use of personal identification information
  • Offense against a computer user
  • Unlawful use of a two-way communication device

The charges relate to allegations involving the deceased man’s identity, the use of law enforcement databases and the actions investigators say were taken in connection with his property.

The case underscores how an investigation into a death can develop into a separate criminal inquiry when authorities identify suspected wrongdoing involving a deceased person’s identity or estate.

Is Sguros Still a Lauderhill Police Officer?

One question remains unanswered: whether Sguros was still employed by the Lauderhill Police Department when the arrest occurred.

The available information did not immediately clarify his current employment status.

Authorities have also not provided a complete account of the property’s ownership status or explained what will happen to the home as the criminal case proceeds.

Those details could become clearer as court proceedings and further official updates provide additional information.

For now, the case centers on allegations that an officer who discovered a man dead during a welfare check later used the man’s identity and pursued steps to claim his property.
