Walmart Parking Lot Shooting Leaves 81-Year-Old Grandfather Dead as Second Suspect Remains at Large

Gainesville, Georgia — An 81-year-old Navy veteran and retired postal worker was killed after being struck by a stray bullet while leaving a Walmart parking lot in Gainesville, leaving his family grieving the loss of a husband, father and grandfather.

James Edward McDaniel, of Lula, Georgia, was riding his mobility scooter toward his vehicle at the Walmart on Shallowford Road NW on Wednesday, October 14, when gunfire erupted during a confrontation between two groups elsewhere in the parking lot, according to Gainesville police.

McDaniel was not involved in the confrontation, investigators said. His death has prompted an investigation into the shooting, with one teenager arrested and another suspect still being sought by authorities.

What Happened in the Walmart Parking Lot?

Police said McDaniel was fatally struck while exiting the store area on the opposite end of the parking lot from the confrontation.

Investigators allege that two groups of males were involved in a dispute and that Kamari Nehemiah Tilmuth, 18, and Erron Lamar Dorsey, 17, opened fire on a group of males.

The shooting unfolded in a busy shopping center where vehicles and pedestrians were present. McDaniel was caught in the gunfire while attempting to return to his vehicle. Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook described the danger posed by the incident.

“They’re shooting across a busy parking lot with hundreds of vehicles, people everywhere at each other,” Holbrook said. “And unfortunately, this gentleman just gets shot and killed just trying to live his everyday life.”

Authorities have not indicated that McDaniel was connected to the dispute.

Teen Suspect Arrested as Second Suspect Remains at Large

Tilmuth, 18, of Gainesville, was arrested on the morning of Sunday, October 18, in connection with McDaniel’s death, according to police.

As of Monday, October 19, he was being held by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. Online records listed charges including felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Dorsey, 17, also of Gainesville, remained at large at the time of the report. Police said he faces the same charges.

It was not immediately known whether Tilmuth had an attorney who could comment on the allegations. The case remains active, and the charges are allegations that have not been established as proven in court.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and are asking anyone with information about the incident or Dorsey’s whereabouts to contact authorities.

Family Remembers a Navy Veteran and Dedicated Father

Beyond the investigation, McDaniel’s death has left his family mourning a man they described as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

McDaniel joined the U.S. Navy shortly after turning 18 and served during the Vietnam era. After completing his military service, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than two decades before retiring. His son, Ted McDaniel, spoke about his father’s military background and the role he played in the family.

“He was known as Senior Chief to a lot of people, but there’s only four people that can call him dad,” Ted said.

“He was in the Navy during Vietnam. He worked for the Post Office for a really long time. He was just a good dad,” he added.

McDaniel is survived by his wife, Gloria, and their four children, along with his grandchildren and other loved ones.

Family Fundraiser Seeks Help With Unexpected Expenses

A fundraiser established by the family is intended to help ease the financial burden of unexpected final expenses following McDaniel’s death.

In the fundraiser, relatives described the loss as devastating and said they were relying on one another as they faced the days ahead.

“Our family is now leaning on one another through an unimaginable wave of grief, shock, and heartbreak,” they wrote.

The family also described McDaniel as an innocent bystander whose life was cut short by gunfire while he was simply trying to leave a shopping center.

Walmart Responds as Investigation Continues

A Walmart spokesperson expressed concern about the shooting and said the company would cooperate with investigators.

“The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority. We will work with local law enforcement as they investigate,” the spokesperson told.

Authorities continue to seek information about the shooting and the whereabouts of Dorsey. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Gainesville Police Department’s tip line at 770-533-5873 or submit information through the department’s online tip portal at Gainesville.org.

The investigation remains ongoing as McDaniel’s family remembers a veteran and father whose ordinary shopping trip ended in tragedy.
