Jennings, Missouri — A 63-year-old retired truck driver was hospitalized after being beaten following a minor car crash, and members of the family accused of attacking him are now publicly apologizing as authorities investigate the incident.
The violent confrontation happened Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19, after Lance Jeffries was involved in a collision with a vehicle carrying Mary Moore, her children’s father, Davion Alfred, their children and other family members.
Video recorded after the crash shows a group of people kicking, slapping and dragging Jeffries while he was on the ground. The footage was later widely shared on social media, drawing intense public reaction.
Crash Quickly Escalated Into Violence
According to police, the confrontation began after Jeffries rear-ended the vehicle carrying Moore and her family.
Moore said the group had been returning from a trip to the zoo with the children when the collision occurred. What followed quickly went beyond the initial crash, with Jeffries suffering serious injuries that required hospitalization.
Alfred said the family was upset by what happened immediately after the collision.
“We were trying to keep him from fleeing the scene,” Alfred said. “There’s always three parts to a story: the truth, the in-between and the lies.”
However, when asked whether the violent response was appropriate or justified, Alfred acknowledged that it was not.
“Not at all. None of that was justified,” Alfred said. “I’m hurt, and I’m disappointed in myself.”
Family Members Apologize After Video Spreads
The confrontation was captured on video, and the footage has since been viewed and shared hundreds of thousands of times across social media.
Moore and her aunt, Tamara Logan, can be seen in the video repeatedly striking and kicking Jeffries while he is on the ground. Members of the Moore family expressed regret over their actions and acknowledged that the attack went too far.
Moore said her emotions after the crash affected how she viewed Jeffries in those moments.
“At that moment, my mindset was, ‘I’m angry, I’m upset, my kids are hurting, my vehicle is gone. I wasn’t really thinking, ‘Oh, this is an elderly man.’ My actions, they’re not OK at all. I am hurt, and I am disappointed in myself,” Moore said.
She later acknowledged that she failed to see Jeffries as an individual beyond the immediate situation.
“I did not see a 63-year-old man, and that was my fault,” Moore said. “I saw someone who endangered my kids, and that was all I saw.”
Tamara Logan Also Says She Was Wrong
Logan also apologized for her involvement in the confrontation while addressing the backlash that followed the video’s spread. She specifically acknowledged striking Jeffries and said she accepted responsibility for her actions.
“I apologize for kicking and slapping him. I was in the wrong,” Logan said. “But all the threats, the harassment and the bounty online are uncalled for.”
Her comments came as the family faced intense criticism and online threats following the video’s circulation.
The situation has generated widespread discussion about how people respond emotionally after traffic crashes, particularly when children or other family members are involved.
Prosecutors Say Investigation Is Ongoing
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has confirmed that authorities are investigating the incident.
In a statement, the office said:
“We are aware of the recent incident in Jennings involving a 63-year-old victim who was violently assaulted following a minor traffic collision. Our office is confident the St. Louis County Police Department will find and arrest those responsible as they continue to gather evidence, review video footage, and interview witnesses. Our office will conduct a thorough review of the case when presented and will fully prosecute those responsible.”
