Two Retired San Francisco Police Leaders and Their 24-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead in California Home

Mill Valley, California — Two retired San Francisco Police Department officers and their 24-year-old daughter were found dead inside their Marin County home following a shooting that authorities are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide.

The deadly incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, at a residence on Strawberry Circle in an unincorporated community near Mill Valley, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators believe a retired police sergeant fatally shot his wife and daughter before taking his own life. Authorities have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Three Family Members Identified After California Shooting

On Monday, authorities identified the three people who died as 68-year-old Kevin Mannix, 65-year-old Ann Elizabeth Corriea Mannix, and their 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mannix.

Both Kevin and Ann were retired San Francisco police officers who spent decades serving the department.

The deaths have drawn attention across the San Francisco law enforcement community because of the couple’s lengthy careers and Ann’s historic achievements in policing.

Authorities said deputies discovered the three deceased individuals after responding to reports of gunfire at the family residence.

“There was no ongoing threat,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.

What Happened Inside the Marin County Home?

According to the sheriff’s office, someone inside the residence called 911 to report gunfire. The caller managed to escape the home safely before deputies arrived.

A report by SFist described how a neighbor and her daughter heard yelling coming from the residence. Moments later, a man reportedly ran outside and shouted, “Please call 911, he has a gun!”

Gunshots were heard shortly afterward.

Deputies arrived within minutes, established a perimeter around the property and entered the residence, where they found three people dead.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a complete timeline of the shooting or all the circumstances surrounding the escape. Reports indicated that the person who escaped was the couple’s adult son.

Retired Officers Had Long Careers With SFPD

Kevin Mannix spent his entire 27-year career with the San Francisco Police Department, serving as a sergeant at the department’s Taraval Station.

His wife, Ann Mannix, served with SFPD for more than 30 years before retiring in 2021.

Ann joined the department’s command staff in 2018 and took over its Special Operations Bureau the following year. During her career, she became the first woman to join SFPD’s SWAT team and later the first woman to lead it.

Her professional achievements made her a notable figure within the department, and her death has prompted expressions of grief from members of the law enforcement community.

San Francisco Police Officers Association President Louis Wong said the tragedy had left officers struggling to process the loss.

“To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired,” Wong said.

Police Chief Responds to Family Tragedy

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew also issued a statement following the deaths.

“Ann Mannix served with honor and distinction at the SFPD for over 30 years,” Lew said.

The statements from department leaders reflected the impact of losing a longtime officer and former senior leader, along with her family members, in a single incident.

The suspected murder-suicide has raised further questions about what led to the shooting. However, investigators have not publicly established a motive.

KQED reported that the couple was estranged and going through a divorce. Authorities have not confirmed that the reported separation was connected to the killings.

Investigation Into Suspected Murder-Suicide Continues

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said the preliminary investigation points to a suspected double murder-suicide, with a male identified as the suspected shooter.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the events leading up to the 911 call and the deaths inside the home.

No official motive has been announced, and the available information does not establish why the shooting occurred.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deaths of three members of the Mannix family.
