Hillsborough County Announces Free Drive-Thru Pet Clinic With More Than 1,000 Shots Available

Hillsborough County, Florida — Pet owners in Hillsborough County have an opportunity to save money on routine veterinary care through a free drive-thru clinic offering rabies vaccinations, microchips and pet registration services in Dover.

The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is hosting its annual drive-thru shot clinic at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds. The event is designed to make essential pet services more accessible while helping residents meet local requirements for protecting their animals.

Officials have confirmed that supplies are available for more than 1,000 vaccinations, giving eligible pet owners a chance to get their animals vaccinated without paying the usual cost of a routine appointment.

Free Pet Vaccines and Microchips Available

The annual clinic offers several services intended to help pet owners maintain their animals’ health and meet local registration requirements. Services include free rabies vaccinations, microchips for pets that do not already have them, and pet registration.

To qualify for a rabies vaccine, pets must be at least 3 months old. Owners should ensure their animals meet the age requirement before attending the event.

The clinic’s drive-thru arrangement is intended to make the process more convenient for families who might otherwise need to schedule separate veterinary appointments for vaccinations and identification services.

Why Hillsborough County Is Offering Free Pet Services

Routine veterinary expenses can add up, particularly for households caring for multiple animals. Free vaccination and microchipping services can help reduce those costs while supporting responsible pet ownership.

Rabies prevention is also a major public safety concern. Rabies is a potentially fatal viral disease that can affect mammals, including pets and humans. Vaccinating eligible animals helps protect pets and reduces the risk of the disease spreading within the community.

Hillsborough County requires rabies vaccination under its local animal-control rules. The annual clinic provides residents with an opportunity to meet this requirement while accessing other essential pet services.

County Tags and Registration Requirements

Pet registration is another important part of the event.

Hillsborough County residents receive the required county tag and registration along with their pet’s vaccination. These records help establish that an animal has met applicable local requirements.

Pet owners who live outside Hillsborough County are asked to register their animals with their own county to remain compliant with local rules.

Officials have also confirmed that pets attending the clinic that are not already microchipped will receive a microchip during the visit. Microchips can help identify lost pets and improve the chances of reuniting them with their owners if the animals become separated.

Owners should remember that a microchip is an identification tool, not a substitute for a collar, identification tag or required vaccination.

Drive-Thru Setup Aims to Reduce Pet Anxiety

The clinic is designed to make veterinary care less stressful for both pets and their owners.

Instead of entering a busy veterinary hospital and waiting in a crowded lobby, visitors can remain in their vehicles while their pets receive services. Dr. Ashley Guerra, a veterinarian with the Pet Resource Center, explained how the process works for many animals.

“Most of the times they just stay in the passenger seat or a lot of times they stay in their owner’s arms in front of the wheel, and they just get a little poke,” Guerra said. “It feels like a little bee sting for a second, and then they’re on their way.”

Guerra also explained that avoiding a busy clinic environment can help limit anxious reactions.

“A lot of times we don’t see that fear and anxiety response that we would in a veterinary hospital,” Guerra said. “We just kind of surprise and say, ‘Okay, here you are, you’re getting your vaccine and your microchip if you need it.’ And so they tend to do very, very well.”

The setup offers a practical alternative for pets that become nervous around unfamiliar animals, crowded waiting areas or traditional veterinary visits.

What Pet Owners Should Know Before Attending

The annual event takes place at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds in Dover. However, officials have not provided specific dates or operating hours for future clinics beyond the information available about this annual event.

Pet owners should verify the event schedule with Hillsborough County before making the trip. They should also confirm any additional requirements for participating animals and registration.

With more than 1,000 vaccinations available, the clinic could provide meaningful savings for local households while supporting rabies prevention and pet identification efforts.
