Chicago, Illinois — Cool and cloudy weather will continue across the Chicago area before temperatures gradually climb toward the upper 60s and low 70s heading into the weekend. Gusty northeast winds are also keeping waves elevated along Lake Michigan, prompting continued beach safety concerns in parts of the region.
Wednesday remained cloudy and cool across Chicagoland, with temperatures staying mostly in the 60s. The combination of cool air and persistent northeast winds has also created rougher conditions along the lakefront.
Beach Hazard Statement Remains in Effect
The northeast winds are producing high waves along Lake Michigan, creating potentially dangerous conditions for swimmers and anyone near the shoreline.
A Beach Hazard Statement remains in effect for central and northern Cook County beaches until 10 p.m. Wednesday, while the statement continues for Lake County, Illinois, until noon Thursday.
Anyone heading to the lakefront should remain aware of changing wave conditions, particularly near piers, breakwalls and other areas where strong currents can develop.
The elevated waves are part of the same weather pattern responsible for keeping temperatures below the levels typically associated with warmer late-season afternoons.
Chicago Stays Cloudy and Cool Tonight
Clouds will remain dominant Wednesday night, with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures falling into the mid to upper 50s. The overnight temperatures will provide another reminder that the recent stretch of cooler weather is not ending immediately.
Conditions begin to change Thursday, however, as some breaks in the clouds allow temperatures to recover.
Sunshine Returns Thursday and Friday
Thursday is expected to bring partly cloudy skies, with temperatures climbing into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. The warmer conditions will continue into Friday, when sunshine is expected to become more prominent across the Chicago area. Temperatures will reach the mid-60s, although Friday may not be quite as warm as Thursday.
Despite the relatively modest temperatures, the return of sunshine should provide a noticeable change from Wednesday’s cloudy and chilly conditions.
Warmer Weekend Takes Shape
The weekend will bring another gradual warm-up, although clouds are expected to remain part of the forecast.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to feature partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies, with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper 60s to low 70s.
That means Chicago could see a more comfortable weekend for outdoor activities, although conditions may vary throughout the two days depending on cloud cover. Monday looks similar, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures climbing into the lower 70s.

The forecast suggests that the warmer conditions will not necessarily come with completely clear skies. Instead, residents should expect a mix of sunshine and clouds as temperatures remain relatively mild.

The next significant opportunity for rain does not appear likely until late Tuesday or Wednesday.
That gives Chicago several mostly dry days ahead, with the focus shifting from the immediate lakefront hazards to gradually warmer temperatures.
For now, the main weather concern remains the rough conditions along Lake Michigan, particularly through Thursday morning in areas covered by the Beach Hazard Statement.
After the cool start, Chicago is expected to transition toward milder weather, with temperatures reaching the 70s by the weekend and early next week.
