California Mother Dies After Months of Fighting Severe Burns in Alleged Encampment Attack

Oildale, California — A 33-year-old California mother who suffered severe burns after allegedly being set on fire at a homeless encampment has died, leaving her family grieving and demanding answers as questions remain about whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Frances Lopez of Oildale, in Kern County, spent months battling second- and third-degree burns covering more than 30% of her body after she said she was doused with gasoline and deliberately set ablaze on July 11.

Lopez underwent multiple surgeries and spent an extended period in the hospital before returning home near Bakersfield in September. Her family said she had begun the difficult process of recovering from the devastating injuries.

Her death has now left behind a grieving husband and two children, while relatives are asking why the people they believe were responsible for the attack remain free.

Lopez Recounted the Horrifying Attack

Lopez had previously described the incident during an interview, saying she was visiting a friend inside a tent at the encampment when three people arrived and began arguing with them about money.

According to Lopez, the confrontation quickly escalated.

“And then the guy goes out again and grabs a gas can and is like, ‘f–k it, let’s just light them on fire then,’ and threw the gasoline on us,” Lopez said in a past interview.

She said one of the people involved then prevented her from escaping.

“When I tried to leave, he pushed me back, and I fell on my friend’s bed. And that’s when the girl lit the flame… and we went up in flames.”

Lopez managed to escape the fire using the “stop, drop, and roll” technique before running toward a nearby trailer park in search of help.

She later recalled the terrifying moments after the fire began.

“I was so cold, but I was hot. I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” she said previously.

She Faced Months of Intensive Treatment

Lopez was airlifted to a specialized burn center in Fresno after suffering extensive injuries.

Doctors had to resuscitate her twice during her transport and initial treatment, according to the account provided by her family.

The fire caused deep burns across her back, legs, arms and face, requiring multiple procedures and continued medical treatment.

Her recovery also created a major logistical burden for her family. Because Bakersfield does not have a local specialized burn unit, relatives had to make frequent trips between Bakersfield and Fresno for treatment.

The journey was approximately 107 miles each way, adding another challenge to an already difficult recovery. Lopez had previously spoken about the amount of care she required at home.

“It’s up to my family to do my care, and it’s a lot of stuff, like really a lot,” Lopez said.

Family Finds Her Unresponsive at Home

After months of treatment, Lopez returned home near Bakersfield in September to continue her recovery. Her family said she was still dealing with the effects of her extensive injuries.

According to relatives, her husband, Steven, briefly left their home. When he returned, he found Lopez unresponsive. The family called 911, but Lopez could not be saved.

Her death has now raised new questions surrounding the July attack and the investigation into what happened at the encampment.

Cause of Death Has Not Been Released

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office has not released a cause of death. Lopez’s family said they were informed that a full autopsy could take several weeks to complete. Until the results are available, it remains unclear whether complications from her injuries played a role in her death or whether another medical issue was involved.

It is also unclear whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the July attack.

That uncertainty has intensified the family’s calls for answers. After watching Lopez endure months of surgeries, medical treatment and painful recovery, her loved ones are now mourning a mother of two while seeking accountability for what they believe happened to her.

For now, the investigation and autopsy could provide important information about the circumstances surrounding Lopez’s death and the earlier attack that left her fighting for her life.

Lopez’s family is now left with grief, unanswered questions and a demand for justice. What do you think should happen next in this case? Share your thoughts in the comments.
