Police Arrest Suspect in $271K Luxury Handbag Theft Case After Admitting They Initially Took the Wrong Man Into Custody

Miramar, Florida — A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of more than $271,000 worth of luxury handbags and other belongings from South Florida social media influencer and coach Stormy Wellington, days after police acknowledged that they had initially arrested the wrong person.

Jail records show Shaquille Jaray Palmer was arrested late Friday night by officers with the Miramar Police Department. He is facing a felony charge of first-degree grand theft of $100,000 or more.

The arrest represents a major development in a case that became complicated after authorities discovered that an earlier suspect had been wrongfully taken into custody.

Police Acknowledge Earlier Arrest Was a Mistake

Before Palmer’s arrest, Miramar police acknowledged that a 31-year-old man had been wrongfully arrested in connection with the investigation.

That man was subsequently released after investigators determined they had arrested the wrong person. According to police, the initial confusion stemmed from information involving people who shared the same first name.

Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss previously said authorities had issued a warrant under the wrong name after investigators received information in September.

The mistake became a significant development in the investigation, particularly as Wellington continued providing information to authorities about the person she believed was responsible.

Wellington Identified the Person She Believed Took Her Belongings

Wellington previously made clear that she was not confused about who she believed had taken her belongings.

She returned to police and provided additional information and identification of the person she believed was responsible, according to the case details.

The investigation centers on luxury items reportedly taken from Wellington’s home in August.

Police initially reported that five Hermès handbags and a Chanel water bottle had been stolen. The property was originally valued at $271,938.60.

The high value of the missing items led authorities to investigate the case as a major theft.

Some Luxury Items Were Found at Aventura Business

Investigators later recovered some of the allegedly stolen belongings at an Aventura business that resells authentic designer handbags and other luxury goods.

According to the arrest report, the person suspected of taking the belongings had brought the items to the business as part of a loan arrangement.

The arrangement ultimately ended with the person defaulting, leaving Wellington unable to recover the property.

The discovery of the luxury goods at the resale business became an important part of the investigation as authorities worked to determine how the belongings had ended up there.

More Belongings Were Reported Missing

The case has also expanded beyond the original items reported stolen.

Wellington has since reported additional missing belongings, including two Chanel bags and an expensive Versace dress. The additional reports have added to the losses she says she experienced and further complicated an already unusual investigation.

Wellington previously described the situation as especially frustrating because she believed the person responsible was someone she had trusted.

That element has added a personal dimension to a case involving hundreds of thousands of dollars in luxury property.

Suspect Remains in Broward County Jail

As of Saturday, Palmer was being held at the Broward County Main Jail. His bond amount had not immediately been set.

The latest arrest comes after police publicly acknowledged the earlier mistake and worked to correct the identification issue surrounding the investigation.

The case now moves forward with Palmer facing the first-degree grand theft charge. As with any criminal case, an arrest and criminal charge are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Authorities will continue determining the circumstances surrounding the missing luxury items and how they came to be transferred through the resale business.
