Tipton, California — A 44-year-old California Highway Patrol officer was killed Monday evening in a crash while on duty in the Central Valley, leaving his family, colleagues and communities across California mourning the loss of a longtime public servant.
CHP Officer Brian Liles of Visalia died following a crash on Highway 99, north of Highway 190 in Tipton, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at approximately 5:11 p.m. Monday.
The CHP announced Liles’ death Monday night, describing it as a line-of-duty loss for the agency.
“It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles,” CHP announced Monday night.
Officer Suffered Critical Injuries in Crash
Liles suffered critical injuries in the collision, according to authorities.
First responders immediately attempted to provide emergency medical treatment at the scene. Despite those efforts, Liles’ injuries were fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details surrounding what caused the crash were not immediately provided.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences for Liles, who spent more than a decade serving with the California Highway Patrol and protecting motorists and communities across several parts of the state.
Liles Served CHP for More Than 16 Years
Liles had a 16-year career with the California Highway Patrol.
He graduated from the CHP Academy in 2010 and began his career with the San Jose Area office. During his years with the agency, he also served in the Hayward and Fresno areas.
In 2019, Liles transferred to the Visalia Area, where he continued his service in California’s Central Valley.
His career took him through multiple communities and assignments, allowing him to serve motorists and residents in different parts of the state before his death while on duty.
The CHP said Liles’ dedication to public service would be remembered by those who knew and worked alongside him.
Officer Leaves Behind Wife and Two Children
Liles is survived by his wife and two children, as well as his parents and two sisters.
His death has left his family facing the loss of a husband, father, son and brother while also prompting fellow CHP officers to remember a colleague who spent years serving the public.
The CHP extended its condolences to Liles’ loved ones and the many people who worked with him throughout his career.

Gov. Newsom Pays Tribute to Fallen Officer
California Gov. Gavin Newsom also released a statement following Liles’ death, remembering the officer’s years of public service.
“Officer Brian Liles dedicated his life to serving our communities, and his passing is a heartbreaking loss for the California Highway Patrol and the entire state of California,” Newsom said. “Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by his tragic loss and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and CHP colleagues. He will be remembered for his dedication to serving and protecting the people of California.”

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff
Flags will be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space in honor of Liles.
His death also marks a significant loss for the California Highway Patrol. According to the agency, Liles’ death is CHP’s first on-duty death since 2020.
