Man shoots dog, accidentally hits owner in Colorado Springs

A man in Colorado Springs accidentally shot a dog owner while trying to shoot the owner’s dog during a violent encounter between two pets, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

The incident happened at the Nevada Inn and Suites on South Nevada Avenue. Police said the victim’s dog began attacking the shooter’s dog, and although the animals were similar in size, the victim’s dog never attacked the shooter himself.

As both owners tried to separate the dogs, the man pulled out a gun and shot the victim’s dog. The bullet went through the dog and struck the dog’s owner in the shin.

The injured dog was later picked up by the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries. Police said the dog owner suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the gunshot wound.

At this time, CSPD does not believe the shooter intended to harm the dog owner. Investigators are still determining what charges, if any, the man will face.

Neighbors described the victim as a responsible pet owner and said they’d never had any issues with his animals. One neighbor identified the dog as a German Shepherd and Boxer mix.
