Florida Cosmetic Surgery Investigation: Family Seeks Answers After 29-Year-Old Mom Dies

Florida Cosmetic Surgery Investigation Family Seeks Answers After 29-Year-Old Mom Dies

Miami, Florida — A 29-year-old New York mother traveled to South Florida for cosmetic surgery, hoping to change her appearance. Instead, she died hours after the procedure, leaving behind a seven-year-old daughter and a family searching for answers.

Jennifer Arias underwent liposuction and a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) at New Life Plastic Surgery in Miami on August 13. Her family says they were devastated when they learned she was having trouble breathing shortly after surgery.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Jennifer died from bilateral pulmonary fat emboli, meaning fat embolisms in both lungs resulting from her surgeries. Her death was classified as an accident.

Now, her family is speaking publicly about the loss while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. They also point to another woman who died after undergoing cosmetic procedures at the same clinic with the same surgeon.

Jennifer Arias Traveled From New York for Surgery

Jennifer arrived in Miami on August 12, according to her sister, Erika Arias. Her surgery was scheduled for the following morning at New Life Plastic Surgery.

“She was beautiful, perfect,” Erika said. “Beautiful figure. I just don’t understand what was in her mind to want to change it.”

Jennifer’s mother, Monica Arias, said she had tried to persuade her daughter not to undergo the procedures. She worried about the risks and what might happen to Jennifer’s young daughter if something went wrong.

“If something happens to you, what will happen to your daughter?” Monica recalled asking her.

On the morning of August 13, Jennifer sent her sister a text message at 4:18 a.m. saying she was heading into surgery. Hours later, Erika received a troubling phone call informing her that Jennifer was not doing well and was experiencing breathing difficulties.

“I was basically told that she isn’t doing well … she’s having trouble breathing,” Erika said.

Jennifer’s father, Wilson Arias, said the family immediately began traveling to Miami after learning about the emergency.

Family Says Doctors Could Not Save Her

According to the family, Erika received a call from Julio “J.C.” Clavijo Alvarez, the surgeon they say was scheduled to perform Jennifer’s procedure.

Alvarez is a Miami plastic surgeon listed on New Life Plastic Surgery’s website who promotes his work on social media. Erika said the message she received from the doctor was that the medical team had done everything it could.

“All what I’ve heard from him was just like, ‘We did everything that we could,’ and then, ‘I’m sorry,’” she recalled.

Jennifer was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. Her family said she was still alive when she arrived at the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

The medical examiner subsequently determined that fat embolisms in both lungs caused Jennifer’s death following surgery. The death was classified as accidental, according to the information provided by the medical examiner’s office.

Her mother continues to struggle with the loss, remembering their final conversations and the fears she expressed before the operation.

Another Woman Died After Surgery at the Same Clinic

Jennifer’s death has renewed attention on another fatal case involving New Life Plastic Surgery and the same surgeon.

In 2022, Telemundo 51 reported on the death of Naimy Sucetz, a 41-year-old woman who died after undergoing liposuction and a tummy tuck at the Miami clinic.

According to the medical examiner, Sucetz died from a blood clot in her lungs. Her surgeon was also Julio Clavijo-Alvarez. At the time, Alvarez told that Sucetz had not complained of pain that would have indicated a blood clot.

In court filings related to two previous patient deaths, New Life Plastic Surgery denied responsibility, arguing in part that the physicians involved were independent contractors rather than employees of the clinic.

These cases involve separate patients and circumstances. The available information does not establish that the clinic or surgeon was legally responsible for either death.

The broader concerns raised by the families center on patient safety, the risks associated with cosmetic procedures and the need for answers when serious complications occur.

Sheriff’s Office Has an Open Investigation

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its Homicide Bureau has an open investigation into Jennifer’s death.

Authorities have not announced a final investigative conclusion in the information provided. The family’s questions about the events surrounding the surgery remain central to their search for answers.

Jennifer’s relatives say they want to understand what happened and support any changes that could help protect future patients.

Family Focuses on Jennifer’s Seven-Year-Old Daughter

Beyond the investigation, Jennifer’s family is coping with the loss of a woman they describe as a devoted mother, daughter and sister. Erika said Jennifer loved her daughter deeply and that losing her has left an enormous void in the family.

“She was a great mother. She definitely loved her child so much, so deeply,” Erika said. “And it’s just heartbreaking to see that I won’t see that anymore.”

Monica said the hardest part is knowing that her granddaughter will grow up without her mother’s presence and affection.

“No one will ever be able to give her a mother’s love,” Monica said. “My granddaughter has been left without that.”

The family has also created a fundraiser to help provide for Jenella’s future needs.

As the investigation continues, Jennifer’s relatives say they hope their story will encourage greater attention to cosmetic surgery safety and help prevent other families from experiencing a similar loss.
