Rosenberg, Texas — A 60-year-old Texas man was arrested after police said he intentionally drove his vehicle into a closed Kroger grocery store because he needed to use the bathroom.
The unusual incident happened just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, September 27, when the Rosenberg Police Department said the man accelerated into the store after apparently finding the doors locked.
The crash caused extensive damage to the grocery store, leaving shattered glass scattered around the entrance and a vehicle inside the building.
Police Say Driver Intentionally Crashed Into Store
According to the Rosenberg Police Department, officers responded to the Kroger after the vehicle went through the front entrance while the business was closed.
Police said the driver was apparently upset because he could not get inside the store. In a statement posted on Facebook, the department said:
“On Sunday, September 27th, at approximately 0428, a known male individual intentionally accelerated into Kroger, causing extensive damage to the pharmacy entrance,”
The wording from police indicates investigators believe the crash was intentional rather than an accidental collision.
Photos released by authorities showed the vehicle sitting inside the store near the damaged entrance. Large amounts of shattered glass could be seen both inside and outside the building.
The metal framing around the doors also appeared to have sustained significant damage.
Kroger Was Closed at the Time
The incident occurred during the early morning hours, when the Rosenberg grocery store was not open for business.
According to police, the man apparently wanted to get inside because he needed to use a bathroom. When he discovered the doors were locked, authorities said he responded by driving through the entrance.
The circumstances made for an unusual explanation behind what otherwise could have been treated simply as a serious property-damage incident. Rosenberg police appeared to acknowledge the bizarre nature of the situation in their public statement.
“I guess when you gotta go, you gotta go but we strongly advise finding a store open for business…to do your business,”
The department’s comment quickly drew attention to the unusual reason investigators say was behind the crash.
Extensive Damage Reported Inside the Store
Images from the scene showed the aftermath of the collision. The vehicle had pushed through the entrance and ended up inside the Kroger, while glass from the damaged doors was scattered throughout the area.
The entrance’s metal door frames were also visibly damaged. Police described the damage as extensive, although the department did not provide a specific dollar amount for the repairs.
Because the store was closed at the time of the crash, there was no immediate indication in the police statement that customers were inside the building when the vehicle entered.
The incident nevertheless created a significant mess and left the store’s entrance in need of repairs.
Suspect Identified as 60-Year-Old Man
Police did not publicly identify the suspect by name in the statement. The man was described only as a 60-year-old male, and authorities said he was arrested following the incident.
The police department’s account did not provide additional details about the man’s alleged bathroom emergency, whether he had attempted to contact anyone at the store before the crash or what charges he ultimately faced.
Investigators also did not indicate that anyone was injured in the collision.
