76-Year-Old Woman Dies After Being Attacked With Husband Outside Baltimore Market

Baltimore, Maryland — A 76-year-old woman died after she and her husband were attacked while leaving a Baltimore market, in what authorities are investigating as an apparent targeted assault and robbery.

Claudia Bismark was leaving one of her favorite restaurants with her 60-year-old husband Tuesday morning when the couple were allegedly followed outside and attacked. Police later arrested 32-year-old Montray McCray, who has been charged with assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.

Bismark died from her injuries two days after the attack, according to local reports.

Couple Was Leaving Favorite Breakfast Spot

Bismark and her husband had been visiting Vikki’s Fells Point Deli inside Broadway Market, a place the couple reportedly visited regularly.

According to the owner, Vikki Powers, she knew the couple for decades and later reviewed surveillance footage from inside the market. Powers said McCray was apparently inside the establishment when Bismark and her husband were preparing to leave.

As an employee handed the couple their change, Powers said the suspect walked past them before sitting at a nearby table.

“He saw, then he went down and sat at the table, watched them and followed them out,” Vikki Powers told area NBC affiliate WBAL.

The footage reportedly showed McCray observing the couple before following them outside.

Surveillance Video Captured the Attack

Surveillance footage from a nearby business provided investigators with additional details about what happened next. Bismark and her husband were reportedly walking hand in hand down the street when a man approached and shoved them to the ground.

According to reports, the suspect allegedly took the husband’s wallet before striking Bismark as she appeared to be attempting to get back up.

Baltimore police officers responded to the scene and spoke with both victims. The couple reportedly told officers they had been attacked and robbed by a man who then fled the area.

Police said:

“Both victims were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment,”

Bismark remained hospitalized with her injuries. Two days after the attack, she died.

Suspect Arrested as Charges Could Be Upgraded

Baltimore police announced McCray’s arrest Thursday. He was booked into the Baltimore City Booking Intake Center after being charged with assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.

Authorities said Thursday that upgraded charges were “pending.” Court records indicate McCray was scheduled for a bail or bond review on Oct. 2, followed by a preliminary hearing on Oct. 29.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against McCray have not been established as facts in court.

Community Remembers Claudia Bismark

News of Bismark’s death quickly spread through the Baltimore community, where friends described her as someone who cared deeply about the people around her.
