Boston, Massachusetts — A 7-week-old black kitten is getting a second chance at life after a good Samaritan rescued her from a busy Massachusetts highway, where she was spotted dodging traffic.
The Animal Rescue League of Boston recently shared the kitten’s story, revealing that the tiny feline was brought to its center after being seen on Interstate 93 North. The shelter gave her a fitting name: Freeway.
Now safe from the dangers of the road, the kitten is staying with a foster family as she works toward gaining weight and preparing for a possible adoption.
Kitten Rescued After Dodging Traffic on I-93
According to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, Freeway was brought to the organization by a good Samaritan “after being spotted dodging traffic on 93 North last week.”
At just seven weeks old, the kitten was extremely young to be navigating a busy highway. Traffic on major roads can pose a serious danger to small animals, making quick intervention especially important.
The person who spotted Freeway helped get her out of the dangerous situation and brought her to the rescue center, where she could receive care in a safer environment.
The shelter later shared the story to highlight the kitten’s rescue and her progress following the frightening experience.
Freeway’s Photos Capture Hearts
The rescue organization also shared three photos of the black kitten, giving the public a glimpse of her personality.
In one picture, Freeway appears to bring her paws together while sticking out her tongue. Another shows her resting comfortably with her ears raised and her paws resting on a person’s hand.
A third image captures the kitten with her eyes wide open as she looks toward the person holding her.
The photos offer a heartwarming contrast to the dangerous circumstances in which she was found. Instead of dodging vehicles on a busy highway, Freeway is now receiving attention and care in a protected setting.
The Animal Rescue League of Boston helps more than 16,700 animals each year, according to the organization. Freeway is among the animals that have received assistance through its work.
Kitten Is Staying With a Foster Family
Although Freeway has made it out of immediate danger, she still has some growing to do before she is ready for her next chapter.
The shelter placed her with a foster family so she can gain weight and continue developing before potentially becoming available for adoption.
At seven weeks old, kittens are still in an important stage of growth. A safe environment, appropriate nutrition and attentive care can help young animals build strength as they prepare for life in a permanent home.
The organization has not indicated that Freeway is ready for adoption yet. Her current priority is to grow and become strong enough for the next step.
However, her story could encourage people considering pet adoption to think about welcoming a black cat into their homes.
The shelter suggested that Freeway’s rescue might be a sign for members of the community to “welcome another black cat into your family.”
Do Black Cats Really Bring Bad Luck?
Freeway’s story also offers a reminder that the superstitions surrounding black cats are not universal.
Black cats have long been associated with different beliefs across cultures. In some European folklore, cats were connected with witches, contributing to negative associations that have persisted over time.
But black cats have also been viewed as symbols of good fortune.
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History notes that black cats appear in folklore as both positive and negative omens. Welsh folklore, for example, includes the belief that a black cat can bring good luck to a home.
These contrasting traditions show how the same animal can carry very different meanings depending on the culture and historical period. In Freeway’s case, her story is less about superstition and more about the difference one person’s actions can make for a vulnerable animal.
Freeway’s Rescue Could Lead to a Forever Home
For now, Freeway is recovering with a foster family while the rescue organization helps her prepare for a potential adoption.
Her journey from a dangerous stretch of highway to a safe place demonstrates why reporting animals in distress and contacting rescue organizations can make a difference.
Anyone who encounters a small animal near moving traffic should avoid putting themselves in danger. When possible, contacting local animal control or a reputable rescue organization can help ensure the animal receives appropriate assistance.
Freeway still has some growing to do, but she has already received a second chance thanks to the person who stopped to help.
