Two Bicyclists Killed, Two Injured in Halloween Night Crash as Community Remembers Victims

Montclair, California — Two bicyclists killed when a suspected drunk driver struck a group during a Halloween-themed ride in Southern California have been identified as family members, friends and fellow riders gathered for an emotional vigil to remember their lives.

The victims were identified as 25-year-old Robert Garcia Umanzor and 30-year-old Rumor Ortiz, a single mother. More than 100 people attended the vigil in San Bernardino County, with many arriving on bicycles to honor the two riders who died while doing something they loved.

The deadly collision happened late Saturday night, October 24, near Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue in Montclair. Police said the crash involved approximately 30 bicyclists participating in a Halloween outing.

Two Cyclists Remembered at Emotional Vigil

Friends described Ortiz as a joyful and welcoming person whose presence made a lasting impression on the cycling community.

“She was kindhearted. She was happy all the time. She brought extreme joy to the group,” Ani Fine, a friend of Ortiz, said.

According to friends, Ortiz joined a bicycle crew known as Luna about eight months ago and quickly developed a passion for riding. Her death has left fellow cyclists mourning the loss of someone they said brought happiness and enthusiasm to their group.

Umanzor was also remembered for his outgoing personality and strong connection with his family and friends. His aunt, Yoly Shively, attended the vigil and spoke about how much he enjoyed spending time with the people closest to him.

“He just loved being around people. I know that, and he just loved our family,” Shively told. “He was so sociable, I know, with all his friends.”

The gathering brought together people who wanted to celebrate the victims’ lives while supporting their grieving families.

What Happened During the Halloween Bicycle Ride?

According to the Montclair Police Department, the crash occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on October 24.

The group of bicyclists was traveling eastbound on Kingsley Street when a westbound vehicle struck several riders, police said. The driver allegedly left the scene after the collision.

One cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died after being transported to a hospital. Two additional riders were injured.

According to the Los Angeles Times, citing Montclair police, one surviving cyclist suffered major injuries and remained hospitalized in stable condition. Another sustained a minor head injury and declined further medical treatment.

The collision has raised concerns about the dangers cyclists face when sharing roads with motor vehicles, particularly during nighttime group rides.

Suspected Driver Arrested After Alleged Hit-and-Run

Police identified the suspected driver as 38-year-old Valentin Alberto Rodriguez of Montclair.

Authorities said Rodriguez continued driving after striking the cyclists and allegedly dragged one of the victims for approximately a mile before abandoning his vehicle. Investigators later located him at his home near the crash scene and arrested him.

According to the Montclair Police Department, Rodriguez was booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of several offenses, including:

  • Driving under the influence causing injury or death
  • Felony hit-and-run
  • Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated

The allegations remain subject to the legal process. The case is still under investigation, and the charges have not been established as convictions.

Family Calls for Safer Roads

For the families of Umanzor and Ortiz, the circumstances surrounding the crash have added to the pain of losing loved ones. Shively emphasized the tragedy of the incident while urging drivers to exercise caution.

“Just the way it happened is a tragedy and a message to just be careful, for sure, driving,” she said.

She also called for stronger action against impaired driving and improvements to road safety.

“Let’s get these drinkers off the road,” Shively said. “Let’s see what we can do to make a lot of the streets safer.”

The comments reflect concerns among the victims’ loved ones and fellow cyclists about the risks posed by drivers who may be impaired behind the wheel.

Fundraiser Organized for Umanzor’s Family

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been organized to help Umanzor’s family cover funeral preparation and related expenses as they grieve his death.

The fundraiser’s organizer described the loss as heartbreaking, highlighting the financial responsibilities families can face while dealing with an unexpected death.

Meanwhile, friends and members of the cycling community continue to remember both victims and support those affected by the crash.

Fellow riders have also urged cyclists to take precautions, including wearing helmets, remaining aware of their surroundings and riding in groups when possible.

However, safety measures cannot eliminate every danger posed by reckless or impaired driving. The deadly Montclair collision remains under investigation as the community mourns two cyclists whose lives were cut short during a Halloween night outing.
