Texas Mom Who Gave Birth in a Coma Dies 14 Years Later as Her Family Remembers Her Journey

Longview, Texas — A Texas mother who became the center of a remarkable family story after giving birth to her son while in a coma in 2012 has died 14 years later.

Heather Brown died on Sept. 18, according to her husband, Sean Brown, who announced her death in a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Heather’s story had been followed by thousands of people through the family’s Bringing Home the Browns Facebook page, which Sean created to share updates after an aneurysm caused Heather to suffer seizures and eventually left her in a coma while she was pregnant with their first child.

Heather Gave Birth While in a Coma

Heather was pregnant with the couple’s first baby when her medical emergency changed the course of the family’s life. Her son, John, was born by emergency C-section on Sept. 15, 2012, at 34 weeks, while Heather remained in a coma.

John weighed 4 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.

Heather never came out of the coma following the birth, according to reports from local media. Despite that, Sean continued caring for both his wife and their son while keeping supporters informed about Heather’s condition.

The circumstances surrounding John’s birth made the family’s story widely known, but Sean’s relationship with Heather had started years before the medical crisis.

Sean and Heather’s Relationship Began With a Blind Date

Sean previously told that he first met Heather on a blind date. He initially wasn’t enthusiastic about the idea, but the relationship quickly developed.

“We would stay up until the wee hours talking, and about a month later, we moved in with each other,” he told PEOPLE in 2015. “We got married the following year. I guess she was willing to put up with me for the rest of his life.”

Before Heather’s medical emergency, the couple had been excited about becoming parents. Sean recalled the moment they learned Heather was pregnant and said the positive pregnancy test brought a powerful sense of relief.

“It came back and it was an overwhelming relief that we finally were able to conceive,” he recalled in September 2012.

Sean Was Serving in Afghanistan When Heather Became Sick

The couple faced another challenge during Heather’s pregnancy when Sean, who was serving in the military, was deployed to Afghanistan. Despite the distance, they stayed connected through phone calls, email and Skype.

“We coped; we still had access to talk to each other, so that kept us stable through phone, email and Skype,” Sean said.

According to the family’s Facebook page, Sean was serving in Afghanistan when he learned about Heather’s condition. He immediately made arrangements to return home so he could be with his pregnant wife.

When he arrived back in Texas, local law enforcement helped him reach the hospital as quickly as possible. Sean said the agency “coordinated with Tyler Police Department and they had a police escort waiting” when he landed.

Heather Showed Signs of Improvement

Heather eventually returned home in 2013, although she never fully regained consciousness. For her family, however, there were moments that offered hope.

Two years after John’s birth, Sean said Heather showed a significant sign of improvement when she was able to faintly say her son’s name. Sean continued sharing updates about Heather with the family’s supporters throughout the years.

One October 2023 post included a photo of John sitting beside his mother and reading Dr. Seuss books to her.

“Just thinking about these two this morning. Heather is doing pretty good,” Sean wrote at the time. “No infections or issues so far. She’s been resting at night and her vitals have been stable. Thank you to those that continue to pray and follow.”

Her Son Is Now in Seventh Grade

John has grown up while his mother remained in her long-term condition. According to CBS 19, citing a post from the family’s Facebook page, John is now in the seventh grade.

Over the years, supporters continued following the family’s updates and Heather’s journey.

When Sean announced Heather’s death, more than 14,000 people commented on the Facebook post, reflecting the large community that had followed the family since the beginning of their story.

Heather’s death marks the end of a 14-year journey that began with an unexpected medical crisis during pregnancy and continued through years of family updates, care and support.

Memorial Service Planned in Longview

Heather’s family will hold a memorial service at Greggton Missionary Baptist Church in Longview, Texas, where supporters and loved ones will have an opportunity to remember her.

The service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 at 4600 Tenneryville in Longview.

For more than a decade, Heather’s story connected her family with thousands of people who followed her journey from her emergency hospitalization and John’s birth to the years that followed.
