Coralville, Iowa — A 24-year-old teacher and a 10-year-old fifth-grade student have died after a tragic accident during an elementary school field trip at an Iowa reservoir, leaving their school community mourning the loss of two valued members.
The incident happened Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Lake MacBride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir spillway, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Responders were called to the area shortly after noon as emergency crews began searching the reservoir.
Teacher Identified After Rescue Effort
At approximately 12:43 p.m. Tuesday, responders recovered an adult victim from the Coralville Reservoir. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified her as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, who was a fifth-grade teacher at Norman Borlaug Elementary School. Jorgensen had been participating in a field trip with fifth-grade students at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area when the tragedy occurred.
After recovering the adult victim, emergency crews continued searching the reservoir for another person who was believed to be missing. The search continued throughout Tuesday evening before being suspended overnight.
Missing 10-Year-Old Recovered Wednesday
Search efforts resumed Wednesday morning as authorities and first responders continued looking for the missing child.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that 10-year-old Ahmed Osman was recovered from the Coralville Reservoir on Sept. 23. Authorities did not provide additional details about the circumstances of the accident in the update.
The incident occurred during a School of the Wild field trip for fifth-grade students from Borlaug Elementary, according to a statement from the Iowa City Community School District.
The field trip was being held at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area, a location used for outdoor educational activities.
School District Mourns Two Lives
The deaths have left students, teachers, families and staff across the Iowa City Community School District grieving. The district said:
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,”
The district also expressed sympathy for the families and everyone who knew the teacher and student.
“Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them,” the statement continued.
The school community has been receiving an outpouring of support following the tragedy.
Borlaug Elementary Shares Emotional Message
Norman Borlaug Elementary School also addressed the tragedy in a message shared with the community. The school expressed gratitude to those who had offered support while staff and families dealt with the devastating loss.
The school said:
“Our building is hurting right now, and so are our hearts,”
The statement continued by thanking community members for standing with the school, checking in and offering support during an extraordinarily difficult time.
The message emphasized how much that support meant to the school community as students and staff begin processing the deaths of both Jorgensen and Osman.

Counselors Will Support Students and Staff
The Iowa City Community School District said it will make counselors and additional support personnel available to students, teachers and others affected by the tragedy in the coming days.
School officials acknowledged that people process grief differently and said the immediate focus would be on supporting students and staff.
“We know grief looks different for every person, and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need,” the district said.
For a school community that began the week with an ordinary educational field trip, the tragedy has now brought an outpouring of grief across Borlaug Elementary and the wider district.
