Spartanburg, South Carolina — A 35-year-old mother is facing two counts of attempted murder after her two young children were found injured inside their family home, with authorities alleging the children were attacked with a knife and a blunt object.
Taylor Morgan Gosnell was taken into custody after deputies responded to a home on the 1400 block of Bud Arthur Bridge Road shortly after 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, for a welfare check.
The children, ages 3 and 6, were found unattended and suffering from injuries that appeared to have been caused by a knife, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Both children were transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment and further evaluation.
Deputies Say Children Were Attacked Inside Home
According to investigators, the children were allegedly attacked during the overnight hours before authorities were notified. The sheriff’s office said investigators believed Gosnell had attacked both children with a knife and a blunt object.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the circumstances that led to the alleged attack or provided a motive. As of Sunday, both children remained hospitalized but were reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover from their injuries.
However, prosecutors said the 6-year-old suffered a particularly severe injury.
6-Year-Old Could Face Amputation
The 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said the 6-year-old suffered such severe damage to one of her arms that doctors may ultimately need to amputate it.
The extent of the child’s injuries has added another serious dimension to the case as investigators continue examining what happened inside the home.
Authorities have not indicated whether the child’s condition has changed since the initial reports. The investigation also uncovered signs of what prosecutors described as a violent confrontation inside the residence.
Several televisions and mirrors were reportedly shattered, adding to the evidence investigators were examining at the scene.
Mother Was Detained After Returning Home
Gosnell reportedly returned to the residence while deputies were still at the scene.
Authorities detained her and transported her to a local hospital for an evaluation. During the ambulance trip, she allegedly attempted to flee the vehicle, according to officials.
She was eventually taken to the Spartanburg County Detention Facility.
Gosnell appeared before a judge for a bond hearing Sunday, where she was ordered to remain in custody without bond, according to the sheriff’s office.
