French Bulldog Dies Protecting Owners During California Bear Attack, Family Says She Saved Their Lives

Trinity County, California — A beloved 7-year-old French bulldog died after putting herself between her owners and a bear during a terrifying attack outside their rural Northern California home, according to the dog’s family.

Jeff and Mallory Wilson were seriously injured during the encounter on Sept. 19. Their French bulldog, Cassie, reportedly rushed toward the bear after it attacked Jeff, attempting to protect him before Mallory was also injured.

The couple survived the encounter and have since returned home to recover, but they are now mourning the loss of a dog they say was much more than a pet.

Cassie Rushed to Protect Her Owner

According to Mallory Wilson, the incident began when Jeff followed Cassie outside their home.

“Jeff followed our 7-year-old French bulldog, Cassie, outside and was attacked by a bear. Cassie immediately came to his defense, putting herself between Jeff and the bear. I came outside after hearing screaming and was also attacked before any of us had time to understand what was happening.”

The couple’s friend, Rachel Moscon, also described Cassie’s actions as an attempt to protect Jeff.

“Cassie threw herself between Jeff and the bear in an effort to protect him.”

Despite her small size, the French bulldog confronted the much larger animal while her owners were in danger. The encounter left both Jeff and Mallory with serious injuries.

Couple Suffered Multiple Injuries

According to a verified GoFundMe page established to support the family, Jeff suffered two broken ribs along with numerous bite and claw wounds.

Mallory sustained injuries to her head, face and hand.

Both received medical treatment at a hospital before eventually returning home. The couple is now recovering while dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of the attack.

Cassie, however, did not survive.

The French bulldog died two days after the bear encounter, leaving the Wilsons to grieve while they continue recovering from their own injuries.

“She Was Never Meant to Be a Guard Dog”

Mallory emphasized that Cassie had never been trained or expected to protect the family from dangerous animals.

“Cassie was never meant to be a guard dog,” Mallory said. “She was a beloved indoor lapdog, and we are heartbroken that she ever had to be in the position to fight for her life. We believe her actions helped save our lives.”

For the Wilsons, Cassie’s importance went far beyond what happened during those terrifying moments. Mallory described her as an “enormous” part of the family and a constant companion.

“She was funny, stubborn, loving, incredibly brave, and completely devoted to us,”

The couple now has to navigate their recovery without the dog who had been by their side for years.

Family Wants Wildlife Respected

Despite the traumatic encounter, the Wilsons said they do not want what happened to fuel fear or hatred toward bears or other wildlife.

The couple said they deliberately chose to live in rural Northern California because of their connection to nature and their appreciation for the animals around them.

“We chose to live in rural Northern California because we treasure being surrounded by the natural world and the wildlife with whom we share it. This was an unprovoked and extraordinarily unusual encounter that none of us could have anticipated. We can grieve Cassie and be devastated by what happened while still respecting the wild animals that belong in these places,” the couple wrote.

Their comments reflect the complicated emotions surrounding the attack: grief over the loss of Cassie, concern over their own recovery and continued respect for the wildlife that surrounds their home.

Couple Faces Long Recovery

The Wilsons have returned home but still face a long physical recovery and mounting medical expenses.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help support the couple as they recover from their injuries and deal with the financial consequences of the attack.

For now, their family is remembering Cassie not simply as a small dog caught in a frightening encounter, but as a beloved companion whose final moments were spent trying to protect the people she loved.

The Wilsons say they believe Cassie’s actions helped save their lives, making her loss even more painful.
