Safe Harbor, Florida — A 40-year-old Florida man is facing attempted murder and child abuse charges after deputies say he shot his girlfriend outside a bar, ran her over with his SUV and fled the scene with his 5-year-old child inside the vehicle.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Christopher “Dodge” Smith and the victim as Jessica Antolini, 30. Antolini remained hospitalized in critical condition following the incident, according to the information released by authorities.
Investigators say the attack unfolded after the couple became involved in an argument outside a bar in the Safe Harbor area. The case led to a police pursuit and Smith’s eventual arrest.
What Happened Outside the Florida Bar?
According to a criminal complaint, Smith arrived at the bar shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses reportedly told investigators that he appeared to be looking for Antolini, with some describing his behavior as if he were “hunting” her down.
The complaint states that Smith eventually found his girlfriend, and the two became involved in an argument outside the establishment.
During the confrontation, Smith allegedly shot Antolini in the face. Deputies further allege that he then drove his SUV over her before leaving the scene.
The incident prompted multiple emergency calls from witnesses who reported the shooting and provided authorities with information about the vehicle involved.
The allegations outlined in the criminal complaint form the basis of the ongoing investigation. Smith has been charged in connection with the incident, but the accusations have not been proven in court.
Deputies Track Down Suspect After Shooting
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving multiple 911 calls from people who witnessed the incident.
Witnesses reportedly provided information that helped deputies identify and locate Smith’s SUV. When officers found the vehicle, they attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
According to investigators, Smith did not comply with the attempted stop. Deputies subsequently immobilized the SUV during the pursuit.
Body-camera, dash-camera and aerial footage released by the sheriff’s office appeared to show a patrol vehicle carrying out a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to stop the suspect’s SUV.
The maneuver brought the pursuit to an end, allowing authorities to take Smith into custody.
The sheriff’s office has not indicated that the child inside the SUV was physically injured during the incident.
Five-Year-Old Child Was Inside the SUV
One of the most concerning details in the case is that Smith’s 5-year-old child was reportedly inside the vehicle when he allegedly fled after the shooting.
Authorities say the child was not injured and was later reunited with family members.
The child’s presence in the SUV is central to the child abuse charge Smith faces. Investigators have not provided additional details about the child’s exact position in the vehicle during the alleged attack or the subsequent pursuit.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to establish the sequence of events and document the evidence gathered at the scene.

Girlfriend Remains in Critical Condition
Antolini was hospitalized following the alleged shooting and vehicle incident. According to the available information, she remained in critical condition.
Authorities have not released further details about her medical treatment or provided an updated prognosis.
Her condition remains a key concern as the criminal case moves forward. The investigation also involves witness accounts, emergency calls and video footage associated with the police response. Officials have not announced any additional charges beyond those reported in connection with the incident.
Charges and Jail Status
Smith was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and child abuse, according to the information released by authorities.
He is being held in the Pinellas County jail without bond because of the attempted first-degree murder charge, as reported in the case details. The charges reflect the seriousness of the allegations, but Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not released further information about a court appearance or the next scheduled step in the proceedings.
The investigation has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, the child’s presence during the incident and the efforts by deputies to stop the suspect after he reportedly fled.
As the case continues, further updates may clarify Antolini’s condition and provide additional details about the evidence investigators are reviewing.
