Farmersville, Texas — A Texas high school community is mourning the death of Farmersville High School sophomore Melody Newhouse, who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday while her older sister was left hospitalized in critical condition.
The crash happened on Sept. 25 on Highway 78, the same highway where Melody had previously suffered life-threatening injuries nearly three years earlier.
According to Farmersville Police Chief Marsha Phillips, a pickup truck traveling southbound on Highway 78 attempted to turn left and crossed into the path of a Toyota Camry traveling in the opposite direction. The Camry’s driver was unable to avoid the collision.
Crash Caused Camry to Catch Fire
The collision caused extensive damage to the Camry.
“The impact caused substantial front-end damage to the Camry, forcing the engine block into the passenger compartment and causing the vehicle to catch fire,” Phillips said.
Melody was riding as a passenger in the Camry and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities and reports identifying her through loved ones.
Her 19-year-old sister was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both drivers were hospitalized following the collision. Police said they did not have an update on their conditions at the time of the report.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Melody Had Survived a Previous Highway Accident
The location of the fatal crash carries an especially painful history for Melody’s family.
In October 2023, Melody suffered life-threatening injuries after she was struck by a truck while leaving a school dance on the same highway.
Nearly three years later, she was again involved in a serious crash on Highway 78, this time with fatal consequences. A GoFundMe established by Melody’s father, Eric Newhouse, said the siblings were “heading home from school” when the crash occurred.
The fundraiser described Melody’s older sister as being in “critical condition” and “fighting for her life” following the collision. The family is now facing the loss of Melody while also waiting for updates on her sister’s recovery.
Farmersville High School Remembers Melody
Farmersville High School confirmed Melody’s death Saturday, Sept. 26, sharing an emotional tribute with the school community.
“It is with heavy hearts that Farmersville ISD shares news of the passing of FHS sophomore Melody Newhouse,” officials wrote.
The school described Melody as a student who brought creativity, curiosity and hope for the future to the campus.
“Melody brought creativity, curiosity, and hope for the future to her time at Farmersville High School,” the tribute continued. “She found success in several honors courses and enjoyed writing, origami, and exploring further interests in engineering and Spanish. She also dreamed of starting a YouTube channel.”
The tribute highlighted several of the interests that made Melody known among her classmates and teachers, including writing, origami, engineering and Spanish.
School Offers Support to Students and Staff
Farmersville ISD said Melody was loved by students and staff and would be deeply missed throughout the school community.
“Loved by students and staff, Melody will be deeply missed throughout our school community,” officials wrote. “Please join us in keeping Melody’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers in your prayers, along with others who are still recovering from the tragic accident. Our hearts are with everyone affected during this painful time.”
The school also encouraged students and staff members struggling with the loss to reach out to school counselors for support.
The district said that additional information and plans remained unknown at the time of its statement.
For Melody’s classmates, teachers and loved ones, the days ahead will be marked by grief as the Farmersville community remembers a young student whose life was cut tragically short.
