New York City, New York — A retired New York City police detective is facing a murder charge after authorities accused him of fatally shooting a 46-year-old father of two during an alleged road-rage confrontation on the George Washington Bridge.
Victor Romero, 62, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting of Koran Irvine, who was driving on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the bridge at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to the reported account of the investigation.
Romero, who previously served with the NYPD’s Brooklyn North Narcotics unit, was charged with murder and was awaiting arraignment Wednesday night, police said. The allegations have not been established in court.
The case has drawn attention because Romero was previously described as a hero after he was wounded while intervening in an armed robbery in Brooklyn in 2000.
What Happened on the George Washington Bridge?
Investigators believe the fatal shooting followed a road-rage incident during the evening rush period.
According to the reported account, surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed Irvine’s vehicle suddenly jerk as another motorist pulled alongside the rear passenger side. Investigators believe that movement may have captured the moment the shot was fired.
Irvine’s vehicle then continued rolling toward the median before coming to a stop, while the other vehicle drove away, according to sources cited in the report.
Investigators preliminarily believe a single bullet pierced the rear window, grazed a headrest and struck Irvine in the right shoulder before exiting through the left side of his neck.
Irvine was taken to Englewood Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
The precise circumstances that led to the confrontation, including what happened between the two motorists before the shooting, have not been fully detailed in the information released.
Retired Detective Allegedly Admitted to Shooting
Romero, who most recently lived in Haverstraw, New York, allegedly admitted to investigators that he was the shooter and handed over the firearm, according to sources cited in the report.
He was charged with murder following the investigation. The case remains a criminal matter, and the allegations against Romero will be addressed through the court process. Further proceedings are expected to clarify the evidence, the circumstances of the encounter and the prosecution’s case.
Authorities have not provided a complete public account of what prompted the alleged shooting.
Why Romero Was Once Described as a Hero
Romero’s past police career has become another notable element of the case.
He retired from the NYPD in late July 2001, roughly a year after being wounded during an off-duty confrontation at his family’s dry-cleaning business, King’s Laundromat, on Kings Highway in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Police sources previously said Romero was at the business in June 2000 when armed robbers threatened people inside. One of the suspects allegedly demanded money and threatened to shoot those present, according to a contemporary report.
Romero reportedly initially indicated that he would cooperate and pleaded with the robbers not to hurt anyone. When one suspect allegedly put a weapon against a customer’s cheek, Romero opened fire with his service weapon.
The ensuing exchange left Romero and two suspects wounded.
A police officer at the scene praised Romero at the time, saying he was fortunate to have survived the gunfight and crediting him with preventing a potentially deadly situation.
That earlier incident helped establish Romero’s reputation as an officer who had intervened during a dangerous robbery. His arrest in the bridge shooting case has now placed his past service alongside a very different set of allegations.

Who Was Koran Irvine?
Irvine, 46, lived in Valley Cottage in Rockland County, New York, and was the father of a son and a daughter. Relatives described him as devoted to his family and struggling to comprehend the sudden loss.
A cousin told the New York Post that Irvine had always put his family first and expressed disbelief over his death. The relative also said Irvine was a passionate New York Jets fan.
Family members remembered him as someone who enjoyed making others laugh and helping people feel welcome.
“He is always the light of the party,” the relative said, describing Irvine as attentive to others and eager to make people feel good.
Those memories have added a personal dimension to a case that began with a reported confrontation on one of the region’s busiest crossings.
Investigation and Court Proceedings
The shooting investigation has focused on the vehicles’ movements, surveillance footage and the circumstances surrounding the alleged confrontation.
The George Washington Bridge connects New York City and New Jersey and carries heavy traffic throughout the day, making the reported incident a serious public safety concern.
Romero’s murder charge remains an allegation unless and until it is proven in court. Additional information from investigators and court proceedings may provide a fuller account of what happened before Irvine was shot.
For Irvine’s family, the case follows the sudden loss of a father whose relatives say his life revolved around his loved ones.
