Little Rock, Arkansas — Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread has been recalled in five states because the product contains milk that was not declared on its packaging, creating a potential health risk for people with milk allergies.
Flowers Foods announced the recall Friday, Oct. 2, after discovering that certain packages of its Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread did not properly identify milk as an ingredient.
The recalled products were distributed in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas and were sold in both 20-ounce and 40-ounce packages.
Milk Allergy Warning Issued for Consumers
The company is warning people with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity not to eat the affected bread.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may run the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume this product,” the company said in its recall announcement.
The issue involves undeclared milk, meaning consumers checking the ingredient information may not realize that the bread contains dairy.
For people with milk allergies, accidental exposure can potentially result in an allergic reaction.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products in the affected states are being advised to check the expiration date and product information before eating them.
Check Expiration Dates and Product Codes
The recalled Nature’s Own products include packages with expiration dates between Oct. 8 and Oct. 18. The affected products can also be identified by specific product codes printed on the packaging.
The recalled codes include:
- 0188 262 20:06 – 0188 262 22:05
- 0188 265 09:20 – 0188 265 10:30
- 0188 267 04:50 – 0188 267 06:00
- 0188 270 04:15 – 0188 270 06:05
- 0188 272 17:15 – 0188 272 19:25
The affected UPC codes are 0 72250 91662 2 and 0 72250 00683 5.
Consumers should compare the information on their packages with the recalled product details before consuming the bread.
Why Was the Bread Recalled?
Flowers Foods said the recall was initiated after the company reviewed its production records and discovered that certain packages had not properly listed milk.
“The recall was initiated after the company discovered during a review of the production records that certain packages of Nature’s Own 20 oz. Hawaiian Bread and Nature’s Own 2-pack Hawaiian Bread 40 oz. did not declare milk as an ingredient,” the company said.
The company also confirmed that no related illnesses or incidents have been reported to date.
The recall is therefore considered a precautionary measure aimed particularly at protecting consumers who may have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.
Consumers Should Not Eat the Recalled Bread
Anyone who purchased one of the affected products and has a milk allergy should not consume the bread.
Consumers are advised to discard the recalled product or return it to the place where it was purchased. Those who return the affected bread to the place of purchase are eligible for a full refund, according to the company.

People who do not have a milk allergy may not face the same allergy-related risk, but consumers should still follow the recall instructions and avoid eating products covered by the recall.
Milk Allergy Symptoms Can Vary
A milk allergy can cause a range of symptoms, and reactions can vary significantly from one person to another.
Possible symptoms include hives, wheezing, itching or tingling around the lips or mouth, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, coughing, shortness of breath and vomiting.
More serious allergic reactions can require immediate medical attention.
Anyone who believes they may be experiencing a severe allergic reaction after consuming a food containing milk should seek emergency medical care.
For now, consumers in the five affected states should take a close look at any Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread purchased recently, particularly products carrying the listed expiration dates and product codes.
