Vienna, Georgia — Two men are dead and 35 people were wounded after gunfire erupted at a crowded block party during homecoming weekend, sending more than 1,000 people running through the streets in the middle of the night.
The shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, on the 900 block of Pine Street in Vienna, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Dooly County Sheriff’s Office deputies were already in the area monitoring the neighborhood gathering when they heard gunshots.
Deputies quickly found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two additional victims were found several blocks away and were pronounced dead at the scene.
More Than 50 Shots Sent Crowd Running
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy told a local outlet that more than 1,000 people had gathered around Pine Street for the weekend festivities when the shooting began.
As gunfire erupted, people immediately tried to escape the area. Peavy said people started “going every direction” after more than 50 shots were fired.
The chaos continued even after deputies arrived. While officers were working at the original scene, they heard additional gunfire coming from several blocks away.
The sheriff described the uncertainty facing deputies as they attempted to respond while additional shots were being fired nearby.
“We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else,” he said. “You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”
The large crowd and confusion made the situation even more difficult as people attempted to leave the area.
Some Victims Were Hurt by Cars
Not everyone who was injured was struck directly by gunfire. According to Sheriff Peavy, several people were injured after being hit by vehicles as people tried to flee the shooting scene.
The GBI said 35 people were injured overall, with victims transported to hospitals in the surrounding area for treatment.
The incident unfolded during a weekend gathering associated with homecoming festivities for Dooly County High School. However, school officials emphasized that the block party was not a school-sponsored event.
School Officials Prepare for Impact
Sherrod Willaford, superintendent of the Dooly County School System, acknowledged that the shooting could have a significant emotional impact on students, families and staff.
“We recognize that its impact may reach many of our students, families and staff,” Willaford told.
Schools were scheduled to open Monday with additional safety measures in place as the community dealt with the aftermath of the deadly shooting.

The gathering’s connection to homecoming weekend has raised additional concern because of the number of young people and families who may have been in or around the area when the gunfire began.
Victims Identified as Two Young Men
The two people killed in the shooting have not yet been publicly identified. Dooly Coroner Brett Walls told that both victims were men, ages 20 and 23.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct autopsies as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened before and during the shooting.
Authorities have not publicly announced whether anyone has been arrested or identified as a suspect. A motive has also not been released, leaving investigators with significant questions as they work to reconstruct the events that led to the gunfire.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities with the investigation. Investigators are expected to examine evidence from the scene, speak with witnesses and work to determine who was responsible for the shooting.
The GBI is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help investigators to come forward.
For now, the deadly shooting has left the small Georgia community dealing with two deaths, dozens of injuries and a large-scale investigation following what had been a crowded homecoming weekend gathering.
The incident also highlights the danger that can unfold when gunfire erupts in a densely packed crowd, where panic and attempts to escape can create additional injuries.
