CDOT Warns of Heavy Fourth of July Traffic on I-70 and Mountain Roads

COLORADO — Holiday travelers should prepare for delays this Fourth of July weekend, especially along I-70 and U.S. 285, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

CDOT expects traffic to surge starting Thursday and continuing through Sunday. Although all construction has been paused statewide to ease congestion, drivers still need to obey speed limits in work zones.

Last year, more than 45,000 vehicles passed through the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels over the holiday, and CDOT anticipates similar or even higher volumes this year.

Westbound traffic will likely be heaviest on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, while the return rush is expected to peak Sunday afternoon.

To avoid delays, CDOT recommends checking road conditions in advance using COtrip.org or the COtrip app. Drivers should also pack water, snacks, and emergency supplies in case they get stuck.

CDOT is also reminding drivers to help prevent wildfires: avoid parking on dry grass, maintain your vehicle, and never toss cigarette butts out the window.
