A 51-year-old Colorado man died Monday in Hawaiʻi after becoming unresponsive shortly following a scuba diving lesson with his family, according to Hawai‘i Island police.

Greg Durocher, of Castle Rock, had been diving near Hilo on the Big Island. After about 38 minutes in the water, he returned to shore complaining of difficulty breathing, authorities said.

Shortly after, he became unresponsive. Emergency crews responded to Waiolena Beach Park around 12:30 p.m. The dive master and Durocher’s family immediately began CPR, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
