Colorado City May Use Drones to Monitor Illegal Fireworks This Fourth of July

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — This Fourth of July, a Colorado city is preparing to deploy drones to respond to complaints about illegal fireworks.

According to 9News in Denver, the Wheat Ridge Police Department is ready to use drones to inspect wooded or hard-to-access areas where fireworks may be set off.

“We try to make sure that we have plenty of officers to man the streets during those days,” said Alex Rose, public information officer for the department. “We’re going to be proactive in terms of having a lot of boots on the ground. We’re going to be spread out throughout the city, but one of the tools that we have in our toolbox is drones.”

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office echoed this approach, noting that while most launch sites can be reached by patrol cars, drones may be used when necessary. “If a drone is more advantageous or required, one may be deployed,” a spokesperson said.

Due to fire risk, in-air fireworks remain illegal for public use across Colorado.
