Coralville, Iowa — A 10-year-old fifth-grader and his teacher died after a tragic accident during a school field trip at Lake Macbride State Park, leaving their families, classmates and the wider Iowa City community mourning two lives lost in the same heartbreaking incident.
Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grader at Borlaug Elementary, was visiting the Macbride Nature Recreation Area earlier this week when he wandered toward the lake and fell into the water, according to his father, Mohamed Osman.
The boy’s teacher, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen, reportedly tried to rescue Ahmed after he fell into the water. Both ultimately drowned. Ahmed’s father, 59-year-old Mohamed Osman, described the devastating loss in a phone interview with The New York Times on Thursday.
“We didn’t believe he would leave us this soon,” Osman said. “(He left behind) a lot of dreams.”
Teacher Tried to Save Her Student
The tragedy unfolded Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Lake Macbride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir spillway, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said emergency responders were called to the area at approximately 12:43 p.m. local time after the incident. Jorgensen was recovered from the water that afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Search crews continued looking for Ahmed throughout the evening, but the operation was suspended overnight before resuming the following morning. His body was eventually recovered from the reservoir on Wednesday.
Jorgensen has since been remembered as a hero for attempting to save the young student.
The incident occurred during a School of the Wild field trip involving fifth-graders from Borlaug Elementary, according to the Iowa City Community School District.
Community Holds Emotional Vigil
A vigil was held Thursday night to remember Ahmed and Jorgensen.
Hundreds of people gathered outside Ahmed’s mother’s workplace to honor the fifth-grader and his teacher. Members of the Sudanese community also came together to support Ahmed’s family during the difficult period.
One speaker at the vigil highlighted the importance of the community’s support and expressed gratitude toward the emergency personnel who responded to the tragedy.
More than 15 agencies participated in the search for Ahmed before his body was recovered.
“We hope and pray as one community regardless of who we are,” said the speaker.
The gathering provided an opportunity for friends, family members and community members to grieve together while remembering the two people whose lives were lost.
Father Remembers Son’s Dreams
For Ahmed’s family, the loss has been especially difficult because of how young he was. His father described his son as a child with many dreams ahead of him, making the sudden loss even more painful for those who knew him.
The circumstances surrounding his death have also brought renewed attention to Jorgensen’s actions. According to Ahmed’s father, the teacher entered the water in an attempt to help the child.
The two deaths have left the school community grieving not only a student but also a young educator who was trying to protect him.
School District Offers Support
The Iowa City Community School District released a statement mourning both Ahmed and Jorgensen.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,” the district in a statement.
The district also expressed sympathy for their families, classmates, colleagues and friends.

“Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them,” the district continued.
The school later acknowledged the profound grief affecting students and staff.
“Our building is hurting right now, and so are our hearts,” the school wrote in a separate statement. “But knowing that you are all here for us, standing beside us, checking in, and, lifting us up. It means more than we can put into words. We are so grateful for our community and for each and every one of you.”
Counselors Available for Students and Staff
School officials said counselors and additional support personnel will be available to people affected by the tragedy in the days ahead.
The district emphasized that students and staff may process the loss differently and said its priority is supporting the school community through the grieving process.
“We know grief looks different for every person,” the district said, “and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need.”
