Seattle, Washington — Starbucks is preparing to close approximately 250 coffeehouses across North America this week, marking the company’s second major round of store closures since CEO Brian Niccol took over in 2024.
The company announced the closures Thursday, Sept. 24, saying the affected locations either have not delivered acceptable financial results or do not have a clear path toward providing the experience Starbucks wants for customers and employees.
Starbucks has not released a complete official public list of the stores being closed. However, store hours have already been updated for some locations, with closures beginning as soon as Friday and continuing through the weekend.
The company said the approximately 250 closures represent about 1% of its more than 18,000 North American coffeehouses.
Why Is Starbucks Closing These Stores?
In a message to employees, Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said the company had carefully reviewed its North American coffeehouse portfolio.
“We have carefully reviewed our North America coffeehouse portfolio and identified locations where we do not believe we can consistently deliver the experience we want for customers and partners or where we don’t see a path to acceptable financial performance.”
The closures are part of Starbucks’ broader “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which focuses on improving the coffeehouse experience and investing in stores.
Starbucks said most locations are benefiting from the company’s recent momentum, but some continue to underperform despite efforts by employees.
The company also said it plans to continue opening new stores and investing in existing coffeehouses while closing locations that do not fit its current strategy.
What Happens to Starbucks Employees?
Employees working at affected locations are not necessarily losing their jobs.
Starbucks said it will offer transfer opportunities to other coffeehouses whenever possible. Workers who cannot be placed at another location will receive severance support.
The company did not publicly identify how many of the stores being closed are unionized.
More than 700 U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since late 2021, but Starbucks and the union have yet to reach a labor agreement.

More Starbucks Closures Could Be Confirmed
The locations above should not be considered the complete list of the approximately 250 stores being closed.
Starbucks has not published a comprehensive public closure list, and additional locations may be confirmed as store schedules change.
The closures come as Starbucks continues its broader store investment program. The company said it has already redesigned more than 1,000 coffeehouses across the U.S. and Canada since late 2025 and is accelerating plans to complete at least 1,500 coffeehouse upgrades.
