Denver City Workers Rally Against Proposed Layoff Policy Change

DENVER — City employees in Denver, joined by the group Stronger Denver, are planning a rally to protest a proposed shift in the city’s layoff policy.

The change would replace the current seniority-based system with a new “merit-based” approach. Workers argue this move could open the door to favoritism and put the jobs of long-serving public employees at risk. The same group held a similar protest just weeks ago.

In 2024, Denver voters approved a ballot measure granting collective bargaining rights to workers in various city agencies, including waste management, water, libraries, and the courts. Employees say the new layoff proposal undermines that voter-approved decision.

The rally is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday. FOX31 has reached out to the mayor’s office for a response.
