Inmate Who Died at El Paso County Jail Identified as 37-Year-Old Dequan Ward

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Authorities have identified the inmate who died at the El Paso County Jail on Friday morning, Aug. 15, as 37-year-old Dequan Ward, according to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) said that just before 4:30 a.m., deputies and medical staff found Ward unresponsive in his bunk bed. They immediately began lifesaving measures until the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) and American Medical Response (AMR) arrived.

Despite their efforts, Ward was pronounced dead shortly before 5 a.m.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office extended its sympathies:

“Our Office extends our condolences to Mr. Ward’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The cause of death has not yet been released, and the incident remains under investigation.
