KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is searching for a man accused of murdering a woman in 2022.
According to court documents, a grand jury indicted Richard Zane Holliday in July 2024 for a homicide that occurred in March 2022.
Murder charge
Around 9:45 a.m. on March 1, 2022, Kansas City police responded to a wooded area near a set of railroad tracks after a woman’s body was discovered.
The victim was later identified as Sheryl Turley. Homicide detectives learned she was on supervised release through the U.S. Marshal’s Office, according to the Kansas City Star.
Detectives interviewed Turley’s mother, who said she had lent her car to Holliday and Turley on February 27, expecting it to be returned within a few hours. The pair never came back, and Turley’s mother was unable to reach either of them.
During the investigation, detectives linked the car—a white Pontiac Grand AM—to several suspicious incidents across Kansas City on February 28, including an alleged armed robbery.
Court documents state that Holliday appeared multiple times on surveillance footage, and witnesses later identified him in photo lineups.
In August 2023, investigators obtained a search warrant to collect a buccal swab from Holliday, who was serving time in a Kentucky prison on a federal charge. The DNA samples were sent to Kansas City for testing.
According to investigators, the results matched evidence from the homicide scene, implicating Holliday as the primary suspect.
