JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has not indicated whether he’ll call a special legislative session to redraw congressional maps, despite growing speculation from both political parties.
Missouri currently holds eight U.S. House seats, with six Republican districts and two Democratic districts — Kansas City and St. Louis.
“Our goal, if we move forward and there’s no decision to move forward … is to make sure Missouri’s values are reflected in Washington, D.C.,” Kehoe said during a Tuesday press conference announcing Catherine Hanaway as the next Missouri attorney general. “And I’ve said many times that I think our current speaker (Mike Johnson) does a very good job of matching the values of Missourians.”
The discussion over redistricting follows calls from former President Donald Trump, urging legislatures to redraw maps to secure more Republican seats in the U.S. House.
Texas has already taken the lead in redrawing its congressional districts, reshaping as many as five Democrat-held seats to give Republicans a better chance to unseat incumbents.
“I anticipate that as soon as Texas gets a map passed our governor is going to call an extraordinary session,” said State Rep. Ashley Aune, the Democratic leader in the Missouri House.
Although Kehoe hasn’t committed to a decision, he emphasized the importance of keeping Speaker Mike Johnson in place.
Aune, however, expressed concern, hoping the governor won’t move forward but believing a special session is likely.
“If we look at how Missourians voted in 2024, 58% of Missourians voted for Donald Trump,” Aune said. “But a 7-to-1 map proposes that 87% of our state would be represented by Republicans.”
