Homicide suspect arrested one day after 18th birthday, held in jail on $3 million bond

An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting in Pueblo in late July.

David Michael Lucero was already in custody in Colorado Springs on a parole hold when he was served with a warrant for first-degree murder after deliberation on Aug. 18 in connection with the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Ian Q. Martinez, according to a Pueblo Police Department news release.

Lucero was arrested for the alleged homicide one day after his 18th birthday, the release said. He was transferred from Colorado Springs to the Pueblo County Jail, where he remains in custody on a $3 million cash-only bond as of Aug. 20.

Martinez’s death marked Pueblo’s seventh homicide of 2025. As of Aug. 20, the city had recorded a total of nine homicides.

Police responded to the 600 block of East Arroyo Avenue just after 9 a.m. on July 28 following reports of a shooting. Officers found Martinez in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, according to authorities.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Lucero’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 2.
