The search continues for the suspect in the Staunton State Park stabbing.

A manhunt entered its second day on Wednesday as police searched for the person who stabbed a ranger at Staunton State Park in Colorado in what investigators now believe was a targeted attack.

The incident occurred around noon in the nearly 4,000-acre park southwest of Denver, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

“We have reason to believe this was a targeted attack and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order for residents near Staunton State Park.

The victim, a seasonal Colorado Parks and Wildlife ranger, was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery, the sheriff’s office reported. Officials said the ranger remained in serious condition as of Tuesday afternoon. The suspect fled on foot after the stabbing.

The motive remains under investigation, and the sheriff’s office has not revealed why they believe the attack was targeted.

The suspect’s name has not been released.

Aerial footage from Denver ABC affiliate KMGH on Tuesday showed heavily armed officers searching the park.

Staunton State Park was closed to the public on Tuesday due to the ongoing search, and authorities evacuated visitors, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials.
