2 men arrested in connection with Oak Fire

PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. — Authorities arrested two men in connection with the Oak Fire, which burned through parts of southwestern Colorado on Aug. 10.

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office said Sergio Alaniz Jr., 41, and Ross Heirigs, 60, face multiple counts of fourth-degree arson.

Investigators determined the blaze began at 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 at 152 Oak Drive in Aspen Springs. According to the sheriff’s office, the fire started from an illegal burn barrel and quickly spread through the subdivision, jumping about half a mile into a neighboring community.

Fire crews and aerial resources worked through the evening to contain the flames, which scorched 75 acres before being stopped. The National Interagency Fire Center reported the Oak Fire reached full containment on Saturday.
