Trial nearing start for Pueblo woman accused of killing children

PUEBLO, Colo. — Jury selection is underway for Corena Minjarez, who is accused of killing two children and hiding their remains in Pueblo early last year.

The process began Monday and has continued for three days. Initially, 125 potential jurors reported to the Pueblo Courthouse, and dozens remain as the court works to select the 14 jurors who will hear the case.

Minjarez faces charges of Murder in a Position of Trust and Abuse of a Corpse in connection with the deaths of Yesenia and Jesus Dominguez Jr.

Her co-defendant, Jesus Dominguez Sr., pleaded guilty to Second-Degree Murder on July 10 and agreed to testify against her.

In January 2024, Yesenia’s remains were discovered in a metal container filled with concrete at a Pueblo storage unit. The following month, police said they found Jesus Jr.’s remains inside a suitcase in a car belonging to Minjarez at a Pueblo scrap yard.

During jury selection, the defense asked potential jurors if they could handle viewing photos of deceased children and whether such evidence would influence their verdict.

Jury selection is expected to conclude Thursday, after which opening statements will begin.
