Wrong-Way Driver Arrested in Deadly Highway 285 Crash

Michael Colson, 33, has been arrested in connection with a wrong-way crash that killed two people on Highway 285 last month. The July 21 crash happened near Highway 8, west of C-470.

Colson faces multiple charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular homicide–reckless driving, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

The crash claimed the lives of Michael and Debbie Carman. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, five people were involved across three vehicles.

Colorado State Patrol said the collision occurred when the driver of an Acura RL, later identified as Colson, traveled the wrong way in the northbound lanes and struck two vehicles. One driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The second vehicle, carrying Michael and Debbie Carman, was hit head-on, killing both passengers.

Colson sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was hospitalized before his arrest.
