Southern California wildfire rapidly expands from 50 to over 1,000 acres

Canyon Fire triggers evacuations near Lake Piru as firefighting aircraft battle the blaze

A fast-moving brush fire swept across parts of Southern California on Thursday, forcing residents to evacuate as crews worked urgently to contain the flames.

The Canyon Fire ignited Thursday afternoon east of Lake Piru in Ventura County. Initially estimated at 50 acres, it quickly grew to more than 1,000 acres, fire officials said.

The blaze started north of Highway 126, east of Los Angeles County, and later spread into the county.

Evacuation orders were issued for the Lake Piru Recreation Area and nearby neighborhoods. An evacuation warning was in effect for ranches on the west end of Holser Canyon, NBC 4 reported. Parts of Los Angeles County also faced evacuation orders and warnings.

“The Canyon Fire is currently burning between Los Angeles County and Ventura County in the Piru Lake area. Several zones are under evacuation order and warning,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department stated.

Firefighting aircraft dropped water on the blaze, refilling from Lake Piru, a reservoir in Los Padres National Forest northwest of Los Angeles, NBC 4 reported.

The Canyon Fire was one of at least four wildfires burning across Southern California on Thursday.

Authorities have not determined the cause of the fires.

Earlier this year, multiple wildfires tore through Southern California, scorching over 50,000 acres, destroying more than 18,000 homes and structures, killing at least 30 people, and forcing around 200,000 to evacuate.

So far this year, California has reported more than 4,400 wildfires — up from 3,800 during the same period last year — burning over 221,100 acres, far surpassing the 83,200 acres lost by July last year.
