The National Weather Service has issued severe weather alerts for six states this Friday, August 1, as dangerous conditions continue to sweep across the country.
Thursday’s intense storm on the East Coast was just the beginning. Parts of the Tri-State area were heavily flooded, forcing drivers to abandon their cars on the Clearview Expressway in Queens. Long Island Rail Road service was suspended, and 110 passengers had to be rescued from a train in Bayside after being trapped for an hour, according to the MTA and FDNY.
As New York and New Jersey recover from the flash floods, other states are preparing for tornado threats.
On Friday afternoon, a tornado watch was issued for parts of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming, effective until 10 p.m. MT. The National Weather Service urged residents in the watch area to review emergency plans, check supplies, and be prepared to take immediate action if a warning is issued.
Meanwhile, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Virginia are facing a different threat—flash flooding. The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings for parts of all three states.
“A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring,” the agency said. “If you’re in a flood-prone area, move to higher ground immediately. Flash floods are sudden and violent, developing in minutes to hours—even in areas where it’s not raining.”
