1 arrested, ICE still searching for suspect after immigration operation in Colorado Springs

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson confirmed that one suspect has been arrested following a shooting involving ICE officers on Thursday.

ICE reported that two individuals living in the U.S. illegally tried to ram their vehicle into officers during an operation in the Colorado Springs area. An ICE officer responded by firing three shots at the vehicle before the suspects fled and later abandoned it.

Authorities said they arrested Francisco Zapata-Pacheco, the vehicle’s passenger, around 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Zapata-Pacheco will remain in ICE custody as immigration and criminal proceedings continue.

The second suspect, Jose Mendez-Chavez, is still at large. Officials identified him as a Mexican national who has been convicted of child abuse, domestic violence, and multiple illegal reentries into the U.S.

A nearby resident, Pam Miller, said the incident was frightening, especially since her family had just moved to the area.

“We just moved here, and all kinds of thoughts were going through my head,” Miller said. “It’s kinda a scary situation.”
