Governor Polis Declares August as Colorado Breastfeeding Month

Governor Jared Polis has officially proclaimed August 2025 as Colorado Breastfeeding Month, aligning with National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, celebrated across the U.S.

The proclamation highlights the powerful health benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and parents. Human milk offers vital nutrients and antibodies that protect infants from illness, support healthy development, and strengthen parent-child bonding. For breastfeeding parents, it also lowers the risk of certain cancers, aids postpartum recovery, and boosts overall well-being.

Governor Polis emphasized the “consistent and well-documented health, economic, and environmental benefits of human milk feedings” while also calling for equitable support for all parents—both lactating and non-lactating—and the providers who serve them.

The month also puts a spotlight on milk donation, which plays a life-saving role for infants who can’t be breastfed. Donor milk is especially critical for babies born prematurely or with serious health concerns.

One organization leading the charge is Mothers’ Milk Bank in Arvada. The nonprofit collects excess breast milk from donors, pasteurizes it safely, and distributes it to hospitals across Colorado and beyond.

“Donating milk truly makes a life-saving difference,” said Rebecca Heinrich, Director of Mothers’ Milk Bank. “The need for donor milk is growing, and we’re calling on our community to help meet that need. If you’re a new parent with extra milk, this is a powerful way to give back.”

“We’re excited and grateful that Governor Polis declared August as Colorado Breastfeeding Month for the second year in a row,” said Katie Halverstadt, RN, IBCLC, and Chair of the Coalition. “This recognition is a meaningful step toward building more awareness, support, and celebration of breastfeeding families in Colorado.”
