Southwest Faces Dangerous Heat Wave August 6–14 with Temps Over 120°F

Phoenix, Arizona – A powerful heat wave is expected to scorch Arizona and much of the Southwest from August 6 through 14, with Phoenix possibly hitting a sweltering 120°F by Thursday, August 8. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from Friday through Saturday, and the intense heat is forecast to spread across multiple states.

The National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center report that a strong upper-level ridge will trap extreme heat over southern Arizona, the Southern High Plains, and parts of the central U.S. Southern Arizona has a high (over 60%) chance of reaching dangerous temperature levels. Nearby states like New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma may also see highs topping 110°F between August 6 and 10.

Major cities across the Desert Southwest and Lower Mississippi Valley fall within moderate to slight risk zones. Heat indexes could reach dangerously high levels, raising the threat of heat stroke, wildfires, and worsening drought conditions. Authorities urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon heat, stay hydrated, check on at-risk individuals, and limit unnecessary travel.

Heat alerts could be upgraded midweek as the high-pressure system intensifies. More advisories are likely by Monday as updated forecasts come in.
