The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Florida, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia, with dangerous conditions expected to develop this weekend.
This month has already brought significant weather-related disasters. Over the Fourth of July weekend, Texas experienced catastrophic flooding that claimed at least 121 lives. Just days later, several states were hit by a tornado outbreak.
On July 12, new severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the following areas:
Florida: Wellington, Palm Beach Gardens, Greenacres
Missouri: Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Gordonville
Ohio: Berlin Heights, Beulah Beach, Vermilion, Huron, Wakeman
South Carolina: Beaufort, Port Royal, Burton
Virginia: Sussex, Stony Creek
“Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar,” the alert states. “Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Take shelter in a substantial building and avoid mobile homes, which can be overturned by strong winds.”
The National Weather Service emphasizes that these warnings typically apply to specific areas—usually no larger than a city or small county—where large hail or damaging winds are either detected on radar or confirmed by trained spotters or law enforcement.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain indoors, monitor their local weather stations, and follow official safety guidance. The National Weather Service’s full list of severe weather safety tips is available on their official site.
Stay safe out there this weekend.
